Chris grew up in Camden, Maine, skiing for the local Ragged Mountain ski club. In the 8th grade, Chris went to the J3 Junior Olympics for ski racing representing Maine. Chris then attended Proctor Academy and skied on the varsity team all four years, during which the team won three Lakes Region alpine skiing championships. He went on to attend Colorado College, where he continued to ski, although not competitively. While coaching at Proctor, Chris was inspired to return to racing in USSA Masters races. Chris lives off campus with his wife, Heather, and dog, Fred.
