I spent the weekend in Freeport, Illinois at the 100th birthday of a beloved in-law, and therefore started this week with absolutely zero photographs for this page. Before I go any further, I'd like you to appreciate the pleasant sanity of Midwestern culture, where the victory of the Freeport boys' basketball team over Monroe High School (a game known as the "Snack Bowl") yields the headline you see at the right....Why don't we have mascots named after baked goods and dairy producers? I love the Midwest!

My anxiety (not having any photos, remember?) was augmented by lengthy meetings--all very productive, of course--that ran from 8:00 AM to 9:30, and 10:30 to 2:00 PM. This means that I shot before and after assembly, and a few minutes as teams started afternoon action. Here we are marching up to the Meeting House at 9:48:

On challenging days like this one, students can make life easier without any prompting.

Alan McIntyre's presentation clarified the difference between the Green Dorm Challenge--a competition between dormitories based on environmentally sound practices--and the Green Cup Challenge, which is an annual "competition" in which schools across the country document their electrical use during the month of February. This year, Proctor is doing very well.

Suddenly, assembly is over, and we stream south toward the Wise Center.

At the juncture of walkways at the Wise, many split off to the west, toward Shirley and the Learning Center, but anyone can crowd into the Wise for snacks and a few minutes of socializing.

This preceded my lengthy midday meeting, (which was uncommonly valuable, seriously.) Finally, at about two thirty, I found myself in the former fire shed, which is now a multi-purpose bike shop, ski shop and fire equipment station, where Shauna was giving tips to Steven on waxing techniques for his snowboard.

Wallace was next with the hot iron.

Quickly, kids pile into vans and minibuses for an afternoon at Ragged Mountain. These are freestyle skiers.

The Freeport (IL) Pretzels defeated the Monroe (WI) Cheesemakers. Somehow, it seems that everything will be all right.
This is an astonishing image of Alan beneath a projected pizza reward for the Green Dorm Challenge. Hmmm. A pretzel just wouldn't cut it.....

Assembly's over.
The trudge through old snow to afternoon activities.
Board waxing.
The freestyle bus.
If you look closely, you'll see my camera in Grady's goggles.
