First year boarding students may assume that this spring's early snowmelt, warmth and sun are typical of April in New Hampshire. Perhaps dramatic climate change will prove them to be correct.


 

The science of climate change studies long term trends, not seasonal aberrations, and I suspect that next April may feature the mud season we have come to love. Cold rain fell Friday.

 



After classes, everyone's involved with activities. A short distance up the Mud Pond Trail, the Woods Team feeds a log splitter.

 

They load split logs into the Forestry truck for delivery to Davis House, one of three dorms heated by wood-to-hot water furnaces.

 

Woods Team is a vestige of the student "Improvement Squads" that maintained the school's function throughout the 1930s and '40s.

 

The old fire shed is now a multi-purpose facility! A ski waxing room during the winter, today it is home to the Cycling Team, which is working out on trainers.
