The Stretch Run
Parents' Weekend is now behind us, the calendar is about to turn over to May, and Proctor's athletic teams are entering the stretch run of their seasons. Every year, the spring season seems to fly by and the 2008 campaign has been no different than years past in this regard. Proctor's teams take the field once again this afternoon in hopes of improving upon a strong start to the season. With just three short weeks remaining in the season, the Hornets will undoubtedly leave their all on the fields and courts. Boys' Varsity and Junior Varsity Lacrosse teams scored victories over the weekend against rival New Hampton School, and Girls' Varsity and Junior Varsity Tennis were able to secure wins as well. Today should be an exciting time to be on campus as Varsity Boys', Varsity Girls', and Junior Varsity Girls' Lacrosse all play on Carr Field this afternoon. Varsity Baseball and Varsity Softball also have home games, as well as Varsity Girls' and Varsity Boys' Tennis. For a complete list of upcoming games, please scroll through the "Upcoming Contests" portion of the webpage to your right. We hope to see you around campus today. Go HORNETS!

Game Day!
Yet another Wednesday is upon us and with it comes another opportunity to watch Proctor's athletes in action. The Varsity Baseball team will look to continue the momentum they gained on Saturday when Junior Tyler Swertfager drilled a Grand Slam in the top of the seventh inning to give the Hornets the 14-10 win over Kimball Union Academy, as they travel to Holderness School on Wednesday for a 2:30 contest. The JV Boys' Lacrosse squad will also look to keep up their winning ways after their 7-1 victory over Cardigan Mountain School on Saturday when they make the trek to Dublin School. The Varsity Boys' Lacrosse and Varsity Boys' Tennis teams will continue their road trips as they seek victories against Berwick Academy and Tilton School tomorrow afternoon.
Come out and support the various Proctor athletic teams on Wednesday. Varsity Softball has their first home game of the season at 2:00 against Holderness, while both Varsity and JV Girls Lacrosse play at home at 2:00 and 3:30, respectively. The JV Baseball team will look to revenge an early season loss to Holderness at 2:30 on Farrell Field, while Varsity Girls, JV Girls, and JV Boys Tennis teams will all host matches at 2:30, 1:15, and 3:30, respectively. Great Start!
Under bright blue skies, the Hornets took the field with a buzz on Wednesday as many teams hosted their first matches of the season. Varsity Girls' Lacrosse sent visiting Hebron Academy home with a loss (10-9), while the Varsity Boys' Lacrosse team claimed a victory over Vermont Academy (13-6). The Varsity Boys', Varsity Girls', and JV Boys' Tennis teams were all victorious over rival Holderness School as well. While the baseball and softball teams did not experience the same success as the tennis and lacrosse squads, it was a pleasure for them to simply be on a field for their first live action of the season. Please check out the Recent Results section of the webpage for compete game wrap-ups, and visit the Upcoming Contests section to plan your next visit to campus. The Hornets are off to a great start this season and we hope to see you at a game soon!

Let the Home Games Begin!
Two weeks ago, there was a collective groan among athletic teams as the campus was doused in yet another covering of snow, and the total snow accumulations for the year pushed nearer the all-time record. That misery is long forgotten, however, as Proctor's lacrosse and baseball teams take the fields for the first home games of the season, and the tennis teams host matches against Holderness School. With sunny skies and forecasted temperatures nearing 70 degrees, it should be a great day to be a Hornet! The boys' varsity baseball team hosts Winchendon School at 2:30, followed by the junior varsity against Holderness School at 4:30. The varsity girls' lacrosse team will challenge a talented squad from Hebron Academy on Carr Field at 3:30. On the tennis courts, the boys' JV team will welcome Holderness School at 1:15, followed by boys' varsity at 2:45, and girls' varsity at 3:30. The JV girls' will also host St. Paul's at 2:00. Come out and support the Hornets as the spring season gets into full swing!

Spring Sports!
One week of classes is under our belt and some spring sports had their first games over the weekend, but unfortunately the ground is still covered with snow on much of our campus. With a combination of sunshine, temperatures reaching the upper 50's, and a hard working maintenance crew, playing fields will hopefully be ready in the next week. After a highly successful Winter Season that saw the Girls' Varsity Basketball team capture their first NEPSAC Class C Championship, the Girls' Varsity Hockey team qualify for post-season play in Division 2, the Boys' Varsity Hockey team win the first annual Lakes' Region Tournament, and numerous Alpine Skiers, Nordic Skiers, and Snowboarders record personal bests and qualify for national competitions, this Spring should be another exciting time for Proctor Athletics!

GIRLS' VARSITY BASKETBALL WIN NEPSAC CLASS C CHAMPIONSHIP
The Varsity Girls' Basketball team traveled to Noble and Greenough School on Sunday afternoon to take on a talented Hamden Hall team. After a close game through the first half, the girls were able to pull away in the final five minutes to win 58-48. The win capped an impressive 20-1 season and the first Class C Championship in Girls' Basketball for the Hornets! Please read on for more game highlights!

Lakes Region Champions!
Proctor's Boys' Varsity Hockey team captured the first annual Lakes Region Championship after defeating a talented Tilton squad 5-1 at the Ted Maloney Hockey Rink in Andover on Sunday afternoon. After an up and down year in which the boys often found themselves competing against bigger, stronger, and faster opponents, the Hornets peaked at the right time and got maximum effort out of the entire team during the home stretch. Entering the final game of the regular season, the boys needed a victory against a solid Kimball Union Academy team to solidify the third seed in the Lakes Region playoffs, and they got just that. With the victory, the Hornets were set to face Holderness on Saturday in the Lakes Region semi-finals and stole a win in overtime (5-4) setting up a rematch with a Tilton team who had beaten the Hornets twice during the regular season (3-6, 4-6). In an awesome display of perseverance, the Boys' Varsity Hockey team put on a show for the home fans and taught the entire community a valuable lesson in what can be accomplished when each individual puts the team's goals ahead of his own. Well done, Boys' Varsity Hockey! Please read more about the final week of athletics at Proctor Academy by clicking on the title of this article.

Winter Carnival Excitement
With snow banks reaching to the first floor windows on most buildings and ice dangerously coating most sidewalks, there is little to do except embrace what mother nature has in store for us, and Winter Carnival weekend at Proctor Academy is a time to do just that. We celebrated the snow, ice, and cold weather that have encompassed our cozy campus for the past three months by hosting a Macomber Cup Ski Race at the Blackwater Ski Area, hosting hockey games in the rink, and Varsity Boys' and Girls' Basketball games in Farrell Field House on Friday evening. The weekend was abuzz with activity, and as seen on the most recent "Chuck's Corner," school spirit and fan support were amazing! In the busy life of a boarding school student - going to classes and then directly to afternoon activities - there never seems to be much time to see peers compete on the athletic fields. With the majority of games and competitions held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, it is not often that the whole school is able to attend an athletic competition, but this weekend was different. Please read on to see how Proctor's community came out to support their teams over the Winter Carnival weekend.

The Home Stretch
Proctor Academy's athletic teams enter the last month of competitions and if the final three weeks resemble the first two months, it should be a very exciting finish to the season. Only seven games remain for most hockey and basketball teams, while the various ski and snowboard teams continue with their competitions until the start of spring break. It is this time of year where each coach hopes that his or her instruction has helped his or her team reach its peak performance when it counts most. The development of a team takes much time and effort, but when each individual selflessly buys into the goals and purpose of the group, it is a beautiful thing. As teams on campus enter the latter stages of the season, they each must establish unique goals for the remaining weeks. Post-season play appears to be a common mission for Proctor's hockey and basketball teams as skiers and snowboarders look with the same focus toward regional and state competitions. Please read on by clicking on the title of this article for updates on various Proctor teams and their quests for post-season play.

Defining Success
New Hampshire winters, at least traditional ones like we are experiencing this year, can be long, cold, dark, and snowy. For students and teachers alike, the endless days on the mountain, in the ice rink, or in the gymnasium have the potential to cause each of us to slow down and lose the fire with which we started the winter season. The challenge, then, is to overcome the motivational obstacles that lie in our way and compete at the highest level at all times, in all circumstances. This is certainly not an easy task, but rather is one that tries our ability to handle adversity and forces us to embrace the challenges that lie ahead. Competitive sports have served a role in various cultures for thousands of years, and there is no coincidence that at Proctor Academy we value the place healthy, physical competition plays in our lives. It is not just the sheer thrill of victory that motivates our coaches and students, but the process of building a cohesive team unit that can successfully and gracefully conquer the obstacles each season has in store for us.

Back in Action!
Proctor's athletes returned to campus on January 3rd and are now in the heart of the Winter Athletic season. With seemingly countless games, races, and other competitions, students and coaches alike are busy preparing and practicing each day. In a previous update prior to winter break, Proctor's girls' varsity basketball and hockey teams were highlighted as being undefeated up to that point in the season. While the boys' basketball and hockey teams have notched key wins in the past week of action, coaches Noreen Fifield (varsity basketball) and Christina Dotchin (varsity hockey) have helped lead their girls teams to 9-0 and 9-2 records at the midway point in the season. Fall Season: Award Winners
Exams are done, overseas programs have returned, and students are enjoying a week long break before the Winter Term begins. The 2007 Fall Season brought with it numerous ups and downs, successes and failures, and both met and unmet expectations. Through it all, there was no shortage of teachable moments for our students to learn about themselves and how to face new challenges that come their way. The learning done on the athletic fields serves as a valuable training ground for the obstacles and leadership opportunities our students will encounter in other aspects of their lives. Some of these moments were highlighted in the end of term Athletics Assembly as each coach presented awards. Please read on for details about each team's selections and note the updated schedule for upcoming competitions this winter under the "Season Schedule" icon to your left.

Athlete of the Week - Chris Ruez
On September 26th, the last thing from Chris Ruez's mind was playing football after the junior receiver/tailback suffered a serious hand injury in an off-the-field accident that appeared to end his season. However, after an extensive surgery, a bone graft, and some quick healing, Ruez shocked everybody by returning to the field just four weeks after his injury. His presence was felt this past Saturday as he hauled in four catches for 74 yards (2 TD's) and ran the ball five times for 72 yards (1 TD) on offense while intercepting a key Holderness pass on defense. Chris' performance powered the Hornets to a solid 35-26 victory over rival Holderness in the season finale. Congratulations, Chris and all the Proctor athletes, on a great fall season!

Home Stretch
Parent's weekend could not have fallen on a more beautiful New Hampshire fall day. As a crisp wind gradually brought the bright colored leaves to the ground, many of Proctor's athletic teams found victory over their opponents. Varsity Football got off to a slow start and found themselves trailing big at the half, but were able to put on a third quarter clinic in which they scored forty-two unanswered points to pull out the 42-25 victory. Varsity Girls' Soccer won in dramatic fashion as they managed to beat visiting Kimball Union Academy 1-0 in overtime, and Junior Varsity Girls' Soccer dominated Kimball Union Academy 8-1. Varsity Field Hockey and Boys' Thirds Soccer managed ties against Brewster Academy, but Varsity Boys' Soccer and Junior Varsity Boys' Soccer both fell to talented Brewster squads despite valiant efforts.
The fall athletic season has only two weeks remaining and each of Proctor's teams will look to finish their season on an upward trend. Junior Varsity Football, Thirds Soccer, and Junior Varsity Girls Soccer all took a move in the right direction as they notched wins yesterday. Please read on for more highlights and photos of recent sports action at Proctor Academy. Also, check the Schedule/Highlights section of the website for times and locations of upcoming contests.

Rollercoaster Ride
The ups and downs of high school athletics were never more apparent than the last week of competitions for the Proctor Academy Hornets. All but one of our teams recorded wins on Wednesday, October 10th, but the weekend proved slightly more difficult for many of the Hornet teams. Varsity Boys' Soccer, Varsity Girls' Soccer, and Varsity Field Hockey all went 1-1 on the week with solid wins on Wednesday and tough losses over the weekend. The Varsity Football team also rebounded after their recent defeat to Tilton by easily handling host Hebron Academy 38-7 on Saturday. Proctor's experiential learning opportunities abound in our off campus programs and hands on learning in the classroom, but we must never forget that athletics is one medium that presents our students with daily opportunities for experiential learning. It is the peaks and valleys described above that make high school athletics the learning opportunity that it is. It is only when student-athletes work together to overcome adversity and attempt to capitalize on their collective strengths while improving their weaknesses through practice that true learning begins. With Parents' Weekend just ahead, all of Proctor's teams will look to put forth their best effort over the next week of action. Please read on for more pictures and highlights from the last week of action!

Mid-Season Form
As midterms approach and we near the halfway point in the fall season, Proctor athletes and their coaches have much to be proud of and much to look forward to as the season continues. This past weekend brought legions of Tilton School minibuses to Andover as the Hornets hosted the Rams in six different games. Girls' Varsity Soccer, Varsity Field Hockey, and 3rd's Boys' Soccer all came through with victories against the visitors while JV Girls Soccer won their contest on the road against Vermont Academy 2-1. It was a great day on campus as parents, visitors and local fans came to enjoy the sunshine and high level of play. Senior quarterback Taylor Beasely completed 9-14 passes for 139 yards (3 TD) and rushed five times for 24 yards (1 TD) in the Hornets' convincing 36-14 victory over Kents Hill School (ME) this past Saturday. Beasley has now thrown five touchdowns in two games this season without an interception, and looks to lead the Varsity Football team against visiting rival Tilton School on October 6th at 2:30 pm.

Early Season Success!
The last days of September brought with them a quintessential New England Fall day and a great day of athletic competitions on campus. With Varsity Football (1-1), Varsity Field Hockey (4-0), and Varsity Girls' Soccer (2-1-1) all securing convincing wins, the Hornets continue to perform well during the fall term. Varsity Boys' Soccer (1-1-2) continued their five game road trip with a 0-0 tie against Vermont Academy while JV Boys' Soccer (1-1-1) posted a 2-2 with New Hampton. Please read on for more information regarding our fall athletic teams and their recent accomplishments.

Athlete of the Week - Nikki Fernandez
Junior Nikki Fernandez punched in two goals en route to the Hornets third consecutive Varsity Field Hockey victory and first win over rival, Holderness School, in recent years. Fernandez is an excellent midfielder with strong ball control skills and speed. She has a strong awareness of her teammates and vision on the field. She executed with precision a penalty corner hit for the team's first goal and had a beautiful second goal from the field. Varsity Field Hockey is off to a great start this year behind solid team play and tremendous individual efforts over the first two weeks of the season. Junior Melanie Speers has knocked in four goals in the first three matches to add to the offensive punch and stellar all-around defensive play has allowed just one goal to opponents on the young season.
Congratulations to a great start for the Field Hockey team!

Athlete of the Week - Britt Plante
This season's first Athlete of the Week honors go to senior runner Britt Plante who won the girls' cross country race Wednesday at Cardigan Mountain School. She was trailing by a bit the whole race, but reeled the leader in on the final big hill and then passed her on a long downhill shortly before the finish. Britt then picked it up a notch to put her away with a great kick that made her finish look like she had been running along in the lead the entire time. Britt leads a strong core of returning runners for the cross country team this fall and her coaches are excited about the team's potential behind her leadership.

Game Time!
Under bright blue skies and with unseasonably warm temperatures, the Proctor Academy athletic teams took the field for the first round of games of the 2007-2008 school year. Victories or draws by nearly all of the teams on Wednesday provided an exciting first day to what we hope to be a very successful season. The Varsity Boys' soccer team opened their campaign with a solid 1-0 victory over host Lawrence Academy, while the JV Boys' soccer team handled visiting White Mountain School, 5-0, with ease. Varsity Field Hockey also came up victorious as they blanked visiting Kents Hill 6-0.

Our Purpose
Varsity Football and Varsity Boys Soccer each had scrimmages Saturday in preparation for the season's opening day of competition on September 19th. The Varsity Football team, coming off an undefeated season in 2006, challenged Worcester Academy and Hyde School (CT) over the weekend, while the Boys' Varsity Soccer team took part in the Holderness School Jamboree on Saturday. Both teams were able to get a good look at their talent for the upcoming season in preparation for their first official games this week. On Wednesday, all competitive teams will hit the fields with abandon, but we'd like to encourage you to read on for an outline of athletic offerings at Proctor and our reasoning behind why we think athletics are an important part of a student's overall educational experience.

The playing fields buzz with commotion once again as soccer, football, field hockey and cross country teams get into full swing of sports camp. With 135 new students enrolled for the 2007-2008 school year, coaches are taking this opportunity to check out new talent and measure the progress of their returning players. With the season's first competitions less than two weeks away, there is much to be done in a short period of time so each team is taking full advantage of triple sessions for the remainder of the week. Please check the season schedule portion of the website dates and times of upcoming games.

Spring Awards
The 4th of July festivities are now over and Andover has returned to its serene state for the remainder of the summer until students return for Pre-Season Sports Camp in early September. The 2007 Spring Season was one of the more successful in recent history for the Proctor Academy athletic teams. The Varsity Boys' Lacrosse (7-4) and Varsity Baseball Teams (4-5) had much improved records from their 2006 campaigns while Junior Varsity Girl's Lacrosse (9-1) and Girls' Varsity Tennis (7-0-1) were outstanding. All of these teams return a number of quality players for the 2008 campaign, while many talented younger players will move in to fill the graduating seniors spots.

All-American Selection and Coach of Year for Boys' Lacrosse
Head Varsity Boys' Lacrosse coach, Ian Hamlet, regaled the student body at the annual Spring Athletic Awards assembly with his recollection of a young, skinny, but skilled freshman lacrosse player that stepped onto campus four years ago. Hamlet remembered this young freshman as being full of potential, but no one, not even the player himself, thought that he would be honored with an All-American selection after in his final season as a Hornet. Chris Landers '07 (Manchester, MA) has worked extremely hard over the course of his four-year career at Proctor to become the leader, teammate, and high quality player he is today. Landers was one of only two selections from all independent schools in Northern New England.

Outstanding Team Performances
As the spring athletic season winds down and just one week of competitions remains, Proctor's athletes continue to excel on the athletic field. While certain individuals have put forth spectacular individual performances on the fields this spring, like Ian Putnam's '08 (Woodstock, VT) four goals and two assists in the two most recent varsity lacrosse wins this week, it is the team efforts that continue to inspire coaches, families, and spectators alike. Two teams in particular are experiencing unprecedented success this spring and deserve to be recognized: Girls' Varsity Tennis and Boys' Varsity Lacrosse.

Athletes of the Week: Dan Pendleton and Tyler Swertfager
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Daniel Pendleton '07
Tyler Swertfager '09
Despite this being his first season as a competitive kayaker, Daniel Pendleton (Auburn, WA) has stunned veteran coach, Bert Hinkley, with his enthusiasm and hard work over the course of the season. Daniel has braved the icy waters of the Blackwater River all spring and his efforts in practice have paid off as he finished second, only to the New Hampton coach, in last weekend's Fiddlehead Slalom in Montpelier, VT.
The JV Boys' Lacrosse team has been led all season by sophomore co-captain, Tyler Swertfager (Chappaqua, NY) as he has dominated the defensive third with hard slides and crushing hits. Tyler's leadership in the backfield has anchored the defense throughout the year and helped his teammates improve significantly. Coach Peter Southworth also comments that Tyler has an uncanny ability to turn the ball up field with his long pole and set up his teammates with solid passes and the occasional shot from the perimeter (scoring two goals this season).
Congratulations to both Daniel and Tyler and thank you for your hard work.

Midway Point: Continued Excellence
The baseball, tennis and lacrosse teams at Proctor Academy have continued to have great success as the spring season reaches its midway point. After three full weeks of competition, two teams remain undefeated (Girls JV Lacrosse: 5-0 and Girls Varsity Tennis: 5-0) and two others have suffered only one loss (Varsity Baseball: 4-1, and JV Baseball: 3-1-1). JV Boys' Lacrosse has continued their strong early season rush (4-2), while JV Girls' Tennis (4-2), Varsity Boys' Tennis (4-3) and Varsity Boys' Lacrosse (3-3) have all continued to do very well. With only three weeks of games remaining on the schedule, each of these teams looks to continue to build on these successes and raise the bar for spring athletics at Proctor.

Athletes of the Week: Kinley Viandier and Katie Lehman
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:
Kinley Viadier '07 (Andover, NH)
Katie Lehman '10 (Webster, NH)
Senior Kinley Viandier has improved significantly after playing just two years of competitive tennis at Proctor Academy and has moved up to the #2 singles and #1 doubles spot for the boys' varsity tennis team. Coach Ted Mastin has seen flashes of brilliance from the Andover native in his two recent matches despite losing in a singles tie-breaker to a talented KUA player and then putting forth a valiant effort against a superior Holderness squad. Mastin wants to recognize Viandier for his hardwork and dedication improving each day in practice and during matches.
On the lacrosse field, only one team remains undefeated and freshman Katie Lehman deserves some of the credit for her JV Lax team's success. While playing the point on defense, Katie's hustle and determination have proven to be infectious as she directs her teammates in the defensive third and sets an example for all to follow by playing full throttle throughout the game. She will no doubt be a force at the varsity level in years to come.

Junior Dennis Silvio has sparked the Varsity Baseball team to a 2-1 start this spring with dominant pitching performances in both of his outings. On Saturday versus Brewster Academy, Silvio went 6 innings, allowing just 2 hits with no earned runs, while recording 8 strikeouts. On the season, he has dominated opponents in route to his two wins tallying 15 strikeouts in 10 innings of work without yielding an earned run. Varsity Baseball looks to continue their strong start as they travel to Vermont Academy on Wednesday May 2nd.

Strong Start to Spring Season
Proctor Academy's spring sports teams are off to a strong start despite being forced to practice inside for the first four weeks of the season. Over the past weekend, all but two teams recorded victories in their games bringing the overall record of spring sports to 21-13 so far. Whether it is Lacrosse, Baseball, Tennis, Cycling, or Kayaking, Proctor's athletes are excited to keep up the momentum as they enter another week of competition.

Will Brown and Sayre Limburg: Athlete of the Week
Senior attackman, Will Brown has contributed significantly to Boys' Varsity Lacrosse's strong start to the season. Scoring four goals in the opener, a 16-7 win over Vermont Academy, and three goals in Saturday's tough 10-14 loss to perennial power, Kimball Union, Will has been key to the teams' early success this season.
On the tennis courts, Freshman Sayre Limburg has brought a spark to the Girls' Varsity squad as she won both her singles matches, and her doubles match, at #1 to carry PA to a season-opening 6-3 win over KUA in her first varsity tennis match of her career.

Family Weekend Brings Out the Best!
With picture perfect weather and hundreds of parents and families on campus, Proctor's athletes brought out their best. Most teams took part in their first competitions of the season and surprised coaches and spectators alike with solid performances all around. Varsity Baseball, both JV Lacrosse teams, and Varsity Girls' Tennis all took home wins over the weekend while Varsity Boys' Lacrosse surpised many with a close (10-14) loss to a highly skilled KUA squad. Varsity Girls' Lacrosse, both JV Tennis teams, and JV Baseball came extremely close in their matches, but fell just shy of wins against tough Holderness and Tilton clubs.

Game Time
The sun is finally shining and teams are hitting the fields for the first time all spring. After recent snow storms and flooding, the Proctor Academy Hornets are more than anxious to take the field this weekend as Parent's Weekend is here and we have reached the midpoint in the term. Most teams have home games this Saturday and those start times are listed on the on the Schedule/Highlights section of the website.

Still Waiting...
As we approach mid-April and expect the grass to start to green and trees to begin budding, we are faced with the one thing we could have used more of during the winter season: snow. Fields are covered after recent storms and games continue to be canceled due to the weather, but teams remain optimistic about their seasons ahead. Hopefully, the snow will melt quickly and teams will be able to resume play shortly, but for now, everyone is still waiting.

Spring Sports
As Project Period ends and students take one last weekend at home before the start of Spring Term, players and coaches alike are getting prepared for the upcoming season. With the recent warm spell melting much of the snow on the playing fields, it shouldn't be long before teams are outside practicing and getting ready for the first competitions in just over a week.

Marvin Award Winners
The Charles Marvin Award is given each term to a boy and girl who are new to Proctor Academy for their leadership, sportsmanship, and ability. This winter Chelsea Stevens '08 (Monterey, CA) and Eric Peterson '07 (Newton, NH) were recipients of the Marvin Award. These awards were presented at the Winter Term Athletic Assembly and their coaches' remarks follow.
"Chelsea has done a great job in net this season. She helped us win some big games including the ones against Holderness, Hebron, and Middlesex. She is always focused, ready to work hard, and has demonstrated solid leadership skills. Congratulations, Chelsea!" ~ Christina Dotchin
"Eric came to Proctor this year with a great deal of leadership experience and quickly established himself as a role model to his teammates by the example he set on and off the ice. Eric takes care of his business quietly and without much ado, and never cares to be the center of attention. Through his efforts he has gained the trust of his teammates and has been counted on to deliver during crunch time. Eric's skill on the ice has allowed him to be a big part of our second half run and he will play a huge role in the team's quest to return to the New England Championships in March. Great job, Eric!" ~ Mike Walsh

Playoffs: Boys and Girls Hockey Teams
With finals in full swing, most students are preparing to head home for two weeks of rest and relaxation before returning for the Spring term. However, the Varsity Boys' Hockey and Varsity Girls' Hockey teams are not packing their bags quite yet. On Sunday, both teams found out that they will be heading to the post-season as the Boys garnered the #2 spot for the New England Division 2 Tournament and the Girls were able to secure a #5 spot. Both teams play on Wednesday afternoon, February 28th.

Postseason Potential

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Ethan Okma
Ethan Okma dominated on the football field this fall as a captain on the Hornets undefeated Evergreen League Champion team and has brought this same tenacity and dedication to the wrestling mat this winter. At the Northern New England Invitational this past weekend, Ethan placed 3rd in a bracket of 16 in the 285-pound weight class, despite entering the competition unseeded. He went 5-1 on the day with all of his wins coming by way of pin and helped to lead the Grapplin’ Hornets to one of their highest point totals in recent history at a NNE tournament. Ethan has overcome injury and sickness this winter, but has persevered and is anxious to lead his team to a strong finish.

Stepping Outside the Box
While the winter athletic season is dominated by Proctor’s trademark sports such as skiing, snowboarding, hockey and basketball, there are a few individuals who are involved in a completely unique athletic experience this winter. When thinking about traditional Northern New England winter sports, swimming, fencing and athletic training are not usually the first to come to mind. However, for JJ Rice, Tristan Jones, and Laura Richins, that is not the case. These three Proctor students are involved in independent activities for the winter term, training individually for pursuits that may be unique to the rest of the Proctor community, but are a passion for each of them.

Athletes of the Week: Bridget Gilroy and Nick Fairall
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK:
Bridget Gilroy '09 Nick Fairall '07 Bridget Gilroy (Hopkinton, NH) wowed spectators and competitors alike on Saturday as she placed second in a Macomber Cup race at Pat's Peak. Her time was behind only a Plymouth State University senior, despite being the youngest competitor in the top ten by more than a year. Bridget's performance is the first top ten Macomber Cup finish for a Proctor racer this year. In ski jumping, Nick Fairall (Andover, NH) has become well acquainted with success, and had another outstanding meet over the weekend in Lake Placid. With a jump of 95 meters, Nick won the regional competition and is ready for the Junior World Championships this coming week in Italy.

Athlete of the Week - Neil Ruffini and Vika Mykolenko
Vika Mykolenko scored two of the varsity girls' four goals (and got an assist) for a big win against Hebron last Saturday, scored one of the two goals against Kents Hill this past weekend, and tallied two assists against Concord High on Wednesday. Vika is a model leader for the Hornets and sets the tone on the ice each and every game.
On the boys' side, Neil Ruffini has been on fire during the past two weeks skating for the Hornets boys' varsity hockey team. He collected back to back hat tricks in victories vs. Kents Hill and Pingree, pumped in a single at Holderness and tallied two goals against Vermont Academy. Neil has lead the team on and off the ice and is one of the main reasons that the Hornets are poised to make their run at a New England title. Great work Neil!

Athlete of the Week - Haley Creed
Over the past week, the Varsity Alpine Ski Team has experienced noteable success. Senior Haley Creed stood out from the rest of the competition last Wednesday as she finished with the best time among all skiiers, both male and female. Her combined time was nearly two seconds ahead of anyone else in the field at the end of the day, an astonishing feat. This performance has helped her to earn Athlete of the Week honors.
Congratulations Haley and best of luck as the season continues.

Wheels Turning
The concept of "team sport" runs a gamut from fluid athletics that demand constant interplay and cooperation from all players on the field, to those activities in which highly individualized performances contribute to an overall team score. Soccer, hockey, basketball and football are examples of the former. Wrestling, skiing and tennis fall in the latter catagory. Cycling falls in the twilight zone...that place between time and space in which individual performance and team outcome converge in another dimension.

Saturday’s cold, grey, dismal weather stayed clear long enough for games and matches to be played, and it was a good thing it did. Solid performances and many wins dominated the day. Spring has Sprung!
Though it is Sunday morning and classes for the spring term have yet to begin, many students were up early this morning. The Eastern Ski Team traveled to Attitash in North Conway, NH for the last Spring Series race of the season, while back on campus lacrosse season is underway! With the snow coated Blackwater in the background, the girls lacrosse team had preseason practice on the recently thawed Carr Field. The boys left early for indoor practice in Grantham. Spring has definitely sprung here on campus!

Athlete of the Week: John Arnold '09
For many Proctor athletes, March is a time to take a break. Spring break heralds a mass migration to warm weather, rest and fun with friends. Freshman John Arnold spent his spring break differently than many of his peers. John is an Eastern skier and as a second year J3 at the top of his game, John had a very busy March. Following an already full season with training camps in France and California with Proctor, a series of US Ski Team development camps from Maine to Park City, Utah and divisional qualifying races all over NH, John began spring break training for Junior Olympics. A solid slalom performance at JOs earned John a spot on the podium and an invitation to Canadian K2 (J3) Nationals. John along with nine other JO podium winners (5 girls and 5 boys) went to represent the US Ski Team against the best junior athletes in all of Canada. At the end of five days of racing, John got to get up on the podium one last time for the season with a third place in the final component of the meet – the skills event. What a wonderful, experience rich winter this young man has had. Congratulations on all of your success this winter John!

Athlete of the Week: Spencer Harkins '09
When the season began, we weren’t sure what to make of Spencer Harkins. The easy-going jokester looked more the part of a freestyle skier than an alpine racer. Daily reminders to pull up his baggy ski pants (which any racer knows isn’t fast) and wear his GS suit for training became the opening line of every coaching session. Then, sometime in December, everything changed. Spencer emerged as a focused and hardworking athlete who was not only a wonderful skier, but a good teammate as well. In early January, Spencer started racing to his potential. It wasn’t long before he realized that he was a contender for a spot on the NH Junior Olympic team. Then, during the final qualifier for JOs, disappointment struck… Spencer fell in the second run of the slalom. Since Spencer’s strength is slalom over giant slalom, this fall dashed his hopes for a spot on the JO team. At that point, Spencer had a choice: shrug his shoulders and chalk it up to an unlucky year – or put his game face on and try to qualify for JOs the circuitous way. Spencer chose the latter.
This weekend, Spencer traveled to Attitash for NH J3 Finals. In two solid days of competition, Spencer combined a second place finish in the GS with a decisive win in the SL for the overall first place at NH J3 Finals. The win earned him a berth to J3 Regional Finals and a second shot at JOs. Way to go Spencer!

Wrestling on the Move!
After nearly being eliminated four years ago, Proctor’s wrestling is back and on the upswing. Under he tutelage of new Head Coach Mike Reinacher the program has been focusing on developing skill and discipline. Though it’s tough for a small school like Proctor to take on the larger, southern New England schools in varsity matches as we lack the numbers to be competitive in all of the weight classes. Nevertheless, Proctor has been doing so with determination. This is a program on the move! Though they don’t have any home meets scheduled, you can look for them at Milton Academy on Jan. 21st.

Athlete of the Week: Jerome Dyson '06
Jerome Dyson turned in an outstanding performance against arch rival Holderness School. Jerome sprained his ankle the previous week against Kimball Union and was on crutches until Thursday. Jerome had limited practice on Friday and Saturday, setting the stage for an unforgettable performance. On the second play of the game, Jerome raced 64 yards for the first score. On the subsequent drive by Holderness, Jerome hit the Bulls QB while he was releasing the ball which enabled Chris Leach to step in front of the pass for an interception. With 13 seconds left in the first half, Jerome signaled to QB Tommy Moyon that there was a seam in the defense and Tommy changed the play, resulting in a 3 yard scoring pass. Holderness cut the score to 21-6 in the third quarter and on the kickoff Moyon lateraled to Jerome and he returned the toss for a 70 yard touchdown. Dyson's fourth TD was on a 3 yard run to extend the Proctor lead to 33-6. Jerome's competitive spirit is an inspiration to his teammates. Jerome followed up his performance by thanking the Proctor community in assembly the day after the game for their support and by urging the school to keep the rivalry alive. Jerome is a great athlete and a team leader.

Athlete of the Week: Linsley Truesdale '09
Linsley Truesdale has been a driving force behind the offense of Proctor's JV Girls Soccer Team. Linsley has a powerful shot and knows when to use it and when to set a team mate up for a goal. She has scored 7 of the team's 12 goal's to date and has contributed a great deal to the team's 5-2-1 record. Now that we are playing teams for a second time Linsley is closely marked and working harder than ever to find some space. Currently she is doing a great job sending balls across the net for other's to tap in. During practice Linsley is very willing to try new tactics and help others with their skills.

Athlete of the Week: Mack Duke '07
Sophomore golf sensation Mack Duke put an exclamation point on a fantastic season by blowing away the field at Lakes Region Golf Championship held at Hanover Country Club. Duke finished the year with a record of 7-0 in regular season play and during his run he often left his opponents stunned at his machine like precision and accuracy on the course. At Hanover, in an eighteen-hole stroke play format, Mack shot 75 with the next closest competitor coming in an 81. Most importantly he backboned a 2nd place team finish that is most impressive coming from a varsity program that is only in its second year of competition. Behind Duke's dominance, the Hornet's future on the links is very bright and should be right back in the hunt next spring. Great work Mack!

JV Girls Finish up in Style
The JV girls lacrosse team notched up a win in its final game with a 8-7 defeat of Plymouth High School. Molly Pruden seemed to have glue in her stick, and she marched in for four goals. Rebecca O'Connor, Rebecca Freeman, and Kiersten Wulff were a wall of defense against an aggressive passing game. Coco Loehr stopped more than a dozen shots, and captains Miranda Hickox and Hillary Creed rallied the come from behind win. The team of 28 strong really pulled it together in these past two weeks, and the win is reason to celebrate a fine season.

In the final race of the year, Kaulbach place 2nd in the K-1 Junior class (males between 15 and 19 years old). The race was won by PA paddler John Wright, and while Proctor students have often placed second in the class at the Covered Bridge Slalom in West Cornwall, CT, never has a athlete who started paddling in March of the same year accomplished such a result.
