When Coach Eccleston retired form Proctor and football two years ago, he left an enormous pair of shoes to fill. With 40 years of coaching to his credit, and a 1991 induction into the Rhode Island Football Hall of Fame for coaching, his presence was sorely missed. This year however, Coach Chuck Reid seems equal to the task.

4-4 Effort has the Hornets poised for the second half of the season...
The Proctor Hornets rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie Phillips Exeter on Monday scoring three unanswered goals to tie the Big Red by a score of 4-4. Similar to the comeback effort vs. Holderness on Saturday, however this time the boys were rewarded for their efforts with a half of the carrot.

Home Hill Advantage is Magic for Proctor Skiers
Sunday was an incredible day for Proctor skiers. We hosted our first home hill race at the Blackwater, a Macomber Cup with an exceptional field. UNH, Dartmouth and Colby Sawyer teams were all on hand to participate in the very talented field that turned out for the race. Their participation helped Proctor to the lowest point penalty of any USSA race in NH this year. It also helped senior Perry Kleeman and junior Ian Nevins to the lowest point races in their careers.

Rivals on the Ice
It has been three years since coach Mike Walsh came to us from Tilton School, where he had turned their hockey program into a powerhouse. On Friday night, the rivalry that has sprung from his change in programs was as deeply rooted as ever as Proctor took on Tilton in the Ted. The house was packed and the fans were showing their greenest side, but it wasn’t enough to bring the Hornets out in front.

In a game that was closer than the final score would indicate, the Hornets held off a talented Exeter squad with a tenacious defensive effort for a final score of 68-51. With a home crowd that packed the bleachers, the Hornets did not disappoint their fans with plenty of aerial action and a fine performance.

Athlete of the Week: Candice Currier '08
First Year Goaltender Candice Currier has been the backbone of Proctor's Defense since the start of the season. With the poise and skill of an older player, Candice has led with quiet confidence and has played in every game of season so far.

This past week, Candice and Proctor faced Tilton School and St. Thomas Aguinas. Candice allowed only two goals for wins in both games. Candice shows great promise on and off the ice as a solid, multi-sport student athlete. In Hockey specifically, Candice has already proven her readiness and ability to face high school level play.

Congratulations Candice!

Athlete of the Week: Devin Pyne '06
Jr defenseman Devin Pyne has done yeoman's work since joining the Proctor Boys Varsity Hockey team this winter. His physical presence on the blueline evokes a sense of fear in opposing forwards and his booming shot is a threat to score each time it is unleashed. Devin scored his first prep goal last Friday in the Hornets home opener, in a 6-2 trouncing of Brewster. #24 has provided stability and toughness to the team and also has led by example with his work ethic in our daily practice sessions. Great job Devin!

Athlete of the Week receives a $10 gift certificate to Jakes Market. Thank you Jakes for supporting our athletes!

Proctor Skiers in France
Contrary to the beliefs of some, Thanksgiving Vacation is not entirely a vacation for many of the athletes at Proctor. This year the Easter Ski Team embarked on the second year of early season training in France. A few adjustments were made to last season’s program and kids and coaches alike were thrilled with the new model.

On November 14th twenty-two Eastern Skiers packed their skis and studies and headed to Tignes, France. Accompanied by four coaches the students had several challenges for their time in France: intense early season training, five final exams, and the prospect of FIS races before returning home on the 27th. The trip was outstanding. Each day for the first week the schedule went like this: 7:00am wake up call. 7:30am breakfast. 8:30am be on the first funicular to the glacier. 9:00am head to training. 1:00pm head to town for lunch. 2-4pm study hall. 4-7pm exams. 7:30pm dinner. 8:30pm study hall…

October

10/29/2004
Athlete of the Week: Peter Arnold
Co-captain of the JV Boys Soccer team, Pete has quietly set the tone for this group of players with his incessant hustle, gritty play, and skill with the ball. Marked closely by opposing teams because of his "Tasmanian Devil" style of play and his slashing runs, Pete anchors the field at center halfback.

He leads the team in shots and has scored two critical goals this season, one a key tying goal and the other a game winning blast on Family Weekend. His touch with the ball is improving and his smart, vocal play raises the level of the players around him. Soccer phenom Freddy Adu is fortunate that Pete spends his other seasons alpine skiing and playing lacrosse.

Athlete of the Week: Evan Procknow
Click here for a printable fall athletics schedule.

It is never easy to be the back up goalie. It requires you to be excited for practice week after week, knowing you may never see the net on game day. It requires an unfailing dedication to improving your skill with the faint hope that “someday” you might get your one shot in goal. Evan Procknow displays that undaunted optimism that every coach looks for. As the backup goalie on the Boys Varsity Soccer team, Evan has yet to see a minute of a game, but his attitude is as positive as ever. Varsity Coach Phil Goodnow says of Evan, “Evan's selfless hard work, fine play and dedication make him an excellent role model for all Proctor athletes.” Congratulations Evan!

Athlete of the Week: Brittaney Plante
Click here for a printable fall athletics schedule.

Ninth grader, Brittaney Plante has wowed her coaches in her first year at Proctor. The girls’ cross-country team has proven to be a powerhouse in the Lakes Region, undefeated in four races. Brittaney has been more than a contributor. In her first race she was first in her age group and second overall to teammate, sophomore Louisa Loring. In their second race the two girls put a minute gap on the field in the first three quarters of a mile and raced hard--and alone--to the finish, sprinting into the chute five minutes ahead of the next girl. In her third meet she stunned all of the other Lakes Region teams, breaking the tape in 21:31 for first place and a new course record. This week, despite battling a nasty cold, Brittaney finished just behind Tilton’s top runner for a third place overall. Her finish combined with another win from teammate Louisa Loring clinched the continued undefeated streak for these amazing girls’ team and earned Miss. Plante the title of Athlete of the Week.

Recently moved from her usual midfield position, Perry moved up to the forward line and has been dynamite. “Four goals in the past two games, the spark of the offense, score czarina” say her coaches. “Perry never missed a beat after taking a ball to the eye last week and she continues to be a playmaker on the field. She constantly looks for her teammates to feed the ball to share the scoring.” Congratulations Perry. Keep up the excellent work.

A Surprise for Undefeated Brewster
Click here for a printable fall athletics schedule.

vs. Brewster Academy
Win 2-1
Perennial power Brewster Academy arrived for the match fresh off convincing shutout victories over Gould Academy and Tilton School to start their season off 2-0. Brewster has several very talented players with the ability to score goals in bunches so Proctor's goal was to mark tightly and to work to outnumber the opponent goalside. Simple to say and a real effort to sustain, but defenders Emma Tautkus and Mariel Guay were tenacious as terriers today and rarely did the fleet Brewster Cats get loose in the back.

4-0 over Tilton
Click here for a printable fall athletics schedule.

The varsity field hockey team had an impressive performance on their home field, netting a 4-0 win over Tilton. From the first whistle, the team hustled and played an aggressive style of play. After much offensive circle play by Proctor, Perry Kleeman found the corner of the cage with a hard shot for the early 1-0 lead.

Athlete of the Week: Ariel Sackett
Click here for a printable fall athletics schedule.

JV Field Hockey’s Ariel Sackett had a great attitude from the start - she’s coachable, works hard, and wants to PLAY! While watching a video she wanted to get right out and start practice saying -" we should try that drill!" "How much more time do we have to practice? I want to play!"

When her coaches asked the team who would like to try playing goalie - she said "sure!". They know that she really wants to play on the field (which she will be able to do) but applaud the fact that she said YES to Goalie anyway - when no one else volunteered.

Since that bold offer, she has been making great progress. She made a number of saves in the game yesterday against Sant Bani and kept her attitude positive even when she was scored against.

She is a Total Team player!

Off to a Great Start
Led by an opportunistic defense that prevented big plays and forced several turnovers, the Proctor football team got off a great start on Saturday, defeating Portsmouth Abbey 12-8 in wet, slippery, muddy conditions. The offense did their part by stringing together two scoring drives, the second of which capped an exciting fourth quarter comeback to regain the lead.

Athlete of the Week: Bo Butler
This week’s Athlete of the Week proves that it isn’t always the clutch time goal or the ninth inning homer that makes you shine, sometimes it’s the little things. JV Football coach Nelson Lebo describes Bo Butler as a great team member.
“He is always positive and helpful. The other day we showed up for practice and there were no balls at the field. Bo volunteered to run all the way back to the field house to retrieve them. He helps new players and will even suggest drills that he learned last year on his team, but not in a know-it-all way that makes him uncoachable.”
Bo is a new ninth grader from California. He plays tailback and cornerback.

The problem: five tennis teams sharing ten courts for the spring term. Sports Camp is in Full Swing
Click here for a printable fall athletics schedule.

This week campus is teeming with activity even though classes haven’t begun yet. The reason? Sports camp is in full swing. Following two days of heavy rain and indoor practices, the skies cleared today allowing teams to practice outdoors. Sports camp is an opportunity for new players to showcase their talents, for coaches to see the early development of their team and for everyone to have a good time and improve their skills.

A brilliant season comes to a close
Proctor Boys' hockey has led a charmed existence for the past two seasons under the excellent tutelage of Coach Walsh. Their season last year ended with the Division 2 NEPSAC title and their season this year looked as though it was headed in the same direction as the Hornets entered the tournament as the number one seed. Sadly, the boys from South Kent took the role as spoilers yesterday in the NEPSAC semi-finals in Salem as the Hornets fell to the Cardinals in overtime play...

The Power of Words
Proctor prides itself in being open-minded, accepting and supportive. Yet daily we hear words and expressions around campus that are not consistent with our beliefs. To emphasize this fact, the Student Diversity Group, SAGA and others worked in conjunction with the student activities office to create a powerful presentation to the community. Today in assembly they reminded us that narrow-minded thinking and inconsiderate words victimize us all.

Fall Family Weekend
Each year Fall Family Weekend brings a group of families to campus to share “the Proctor experience” with their sons, daughters, brothers and sisters. This year was no exception as families arrived in throngs, as wide-eyed and expectant as their children just a short month ago. Now however, the kids have learned all about life at Proctor and they’re ready to take parents and siblings through the day with them. On Friday, families are invited to class to see what a normal day (or as close to normal as it can be with a dozen families in the class) of class is like. Classes are followed by informational conferences with individual teachers both Friday night and Sunday morning and sports games entertain on Saturday. We hope you enjoy the weekend!
