The Real Von Gal

4/20/2009
This page is the third in a series by junior Jeremy Gardner.
_________________________________

Reed von Gal is a name that rings a bell to all who hear it. Reed, known as RVG to those close to him, is a two and a half year senior at Proctor Academy. Identifiable by his golf apparel in the spring and his voice all year long, Mr. von Gal is a formidable presence on campus. Whether it is his always-witty jokes or his farcical impersonations of various Proctor personalities, Reed is the go to guy for good times. Always having something funny to say, he can be heard from miles (or buildings) away, brightening someone’s day. With a seemingly endless amount of things to say, if you need someone to talk to or are looking for a “people person”, Reed defines the term. This man of such raw character, such charm, such wit, deserves his own in-depth article, and my friends, here it is.

My first and foremost objective in writing this piece was, in essence, to reveal the real von Gal; and there is no better way to enlighten people than to read the wise words of the man himself. This is the wisdom he professed:

How would you describe yourself?

Well for one, I am a man of the ladies, which is obvious. Everybody at this school knows that I am notorious with the women. Two, I like to consider myself a pretty funny kid because I make people laugh. Three, I am a hard worker, and that just comes out at the forefront of these three descript qualities. When something has to be done, I get it done, and that’s really the number one goal of the day.

What are your ambitions?

CEO of a Fortune 500 company; going for the business world, to do as well as possible.

What’s some advice to people looking to be more like you?

Just take it easy, I have had my fair share of failures, but you just gotta laugh them off, Laughing is the best medicine. Be able to laugh at yourself. Somebody makes a joke about you, just laugh with them. Take humor in your everyday struggles.

What advice do you have for younger students?

Don’t slack off, Proctor is a very easy school to slack off at. It’s easy to not do your work and fall through. Do your work, get good grades, study hard, and have some fun too.

To those looking to obtain your finesse with the ladies, what advice would you give them?

Make ‘em laugh. Don’t get nervous. Hang out, have a good time. Be yourself, which is what it comes down to.

Tell me about your comedic etiquette

You can laugh at other people but not to the sense that they will get upset. There is a fine line that you just have to know. You don’t want to get people upset at you. You don’t need to undercut somebody else to put yourself on top. Keep it classy.

Do you have any relationship advice?

Flattery is great, but don’t be overreaching with that, keep it honest, keep it integral, but always show your significant other that you appreciate the relationship.

What are your best features?

Probably my facial structure and complexion, and my muscular build and extremely toned calves and legs.

Words to live by

Be yourself, self-awareness is really important to be able to take in everything around you. Most important of all, is know how to act in situations. If you can come to terms with that, then you’re going to be golden. Know and be yourself, that’s key.

What role do you play in this community?

My gorgeous features give something for the girls to look at. My honesty and work ethic hopefully rub off on other people.

What is your take on freshmen?

Freshmen are easily manipulated and more people have to positively influence them, because, after all, they will be leading this school in four years.

What do you want the legacy you leave behind to be?

Definitely my work ethic, I had a hard time my sophomore year but I turned it around and got to work and took hard classes and really excelled. I hope that can be some encouragement to students having a hard time, because if I can succeed, they can.

What advice for success do you have?

Don’t procrastinate, the people who work hard and steady are the people who get noticed and do great.

Give me some advice on how to dress

Keep it classy at all times. Keep it preppy, pop the collar sometimes, and be interesting. Go with bright colors and mix ‘em and match ‘em. Sometimes even go plaid and stripes, but usually keep it pretty conservative in the sense of fashion rules. In the winter either the mock turtleneck or thermal shirt are the order of the day. We don’t have much of a dress code here but I always like to look fairly nice. Keep everything fitting right and always wear a belt and some nice shoes, and you will get noticed and talked about.

And I will take his word for it, because he sure gets noticed and talked about. Reed is a unique breed at Proctor, or maybe Proctor just breeds unique students.

Anyway, after interviewing Reed, I walked around campus asking kids what they think of RVG. I came to the conclusion that although he is not pro at volleyball and causes car accidents (which he refutes), he is tan, underrated, classy, he is true to himself, and is an integral, loved part of the community, and, of course, he. is. the. Man
