Nordic Skiing Update!
2/11/2012
Despite the worst natural snow year in recorded history to date, Proctor's Nordic Ski program has benefitted tremendously from being one of only two Lakes Region schools with trainable conditions on campus. Read on for updates on individual athletes, end of season championship pursuits, and community outreach.
Despite poor snow conditions, this winter has proven to be an exciting season for Proctor's Nordic Ski program. The conditions provided by the Proctor Ski Area have allowed Proctor's athletes to consistently train despite warm temperatures and little snow fall, helping the boys' team win last week's Lakes Region race. Having finished consistently in second place just seconds behind league leader St. Paul's School in each race this winter, the boys' squad has a chance to win the Lakes Region title if they are able to win the Lakes Region Championship race this Wednesday! The girls' side has held their own this season, as well, finishing second or third in most races this season behind Maddy Pfeifer's ('12/Andover, NH) consistent first place finishes (she is undefeated in three years of Lakes Region competition!) and the steady performance of both Allie and Beth Hoy ('13/El Paso, TX).
On an individual level, Adam Silverstein ('12/New York, NY) has qualified for Junior Nationals from the Mid-Atlantic Region, and Pfeifer is in the hunt for a nomination from the East Region. Male racers Taylor Pearlman ('12/Granville, OH) and Andrew Young ('12/Andover, NH) - who both qualified to represent Proctor in the New Hampshire High School Championships along with Emi Morison ('14/Andover, NH) - as well as Alvaro Migoya ('13/Cuaijmalpa, Mexico) and Silverstein have, as program director Buz Morison notes, "given so much energy to the program, taking time to compete in Junior National qualifiers and other out-of-school races to get the training and experience to continually improve as athletes."
Not only have Proctor's Nordic skiers been busy training and competing, they have also continued the tradition of leading training sessions with local elementary students every Monday afternoon. Amina Hughes ('13/New London, NH), Allie and Beth Hoy, and Stephen Harris ('13/Morristown, NJ) have led these workshops, and their energy has been infectious as Proctor's Nordic program continues to be instrumental in helping develop a passion for cross country skiing in the local area.
