Girls' Varsity Tennis - Team Spotlight

Proctor’s Varsity Girls’ Tennis program has served as the league leader over the last few seasons due to both their high-end individual athletes and depth of talent, which allowed them to compete against opponents at every ability level. The team was optimistic coming into the season, when a young group of extremely talented athletes showed up for the opening day of practice this spring. However, as the season began without three-year undefeated #1 Sayre Limburg, who is on Mountain Classroom this spring before heading to compete for Philadelphia University next fall, much uncertainty remained regarding the ability of the young players to compete against older competition. Now that the season is nearing completion, Head Coach Whitey Joslin has seen this core group of young talent develop into a force to be reckoned with among Lakes Region opponents, finishing the regular season with 9-2 record, and much momentum heading into the Lakes Region Championship on Saturday.

Cycling - Team Spotlight

With only three returning riders, Proctor’s historically strong cycling team faced many unknowns entering the 2010 season. As he welcomed twelve new riders to the team this spring, head coach Drew Donaldson quickly became not only excited about the developing skills of his team, but also about the camaraderie that formed among riders early in the season. With four Nordic skiers, seven Alpine skiers, one musician, and one cyclist each from Germany, Boulder, CO, and Chicopee, MA, diversity of experience and expectation only begins to explain the dynamics of this team. However, it is through their shared experience over the past five weeks that the unifying devotion to the sport of cycling and to each other that has allowed this group of endurance athletes to position themselves for a successful finish to their season.

Girls' Varsity Lacrosse

The Girls' Varsity Lacrosse team welcomes two new coaches to the program this spring, as Caddie Jackson and Avery Cushman have taken over the reigns of the team for the 2010 season. Coming off of a successful 2009 season which drew upon a core of graduating seniors to provide scoring, defense, and most importantly, leadership, the 2010 edition of the Girls' Varsity Lacrosse team had many questions to answer at the outset of the season. As returning players learn to fill new roles and newcomers find the most effective way to contribute to the overall goals of the team, Coach Jackson is confident in the direction of the program: “While we derive much of our strength and leadership from the seniors, every player is a key player as there isn’t one individual on the team that we do not feel confident putting on the field.”

Nordic Skiing

Nordic skiing requires a combination of strength, aerobic and anaerobic fitness, significant technical skill, emotional maturity, and commitment. Races are grueling and practices are often even more challenging. Head Coach Buz Morison, who has been coaching the sport for years, loves nordic skiing and is eager to share his enthusiasm with young athletes. In his first year at the helm of Proctor’s program, he has focused on creating a culture of commitment, and he has succeeded. Proctor’s Nordic Ski team is a group that is willing to work to attain success, and has fun along the way. So much fun, in fact, that the team now boasts 19 skiers. Coach Morison describes his team as “unbelievably spirited, supportive, and hard working.”

Congratulations, Courtney, you really deserve this terrific honor!OLIVER MOORE – LACROSSEOliver was a new junior attackman to the team this year and he quickly established himself as a goal scorer. With a nose for the net, he quickly drew the attention of each opposing team's best defender in each game, opening up opportunities for the other attackmen to score. Oliver’s knowledge of the game and focus in every practice made him an instant asset to the team. He was also a featured Athlete of the Week, in part for scoring 15 goals in the first three games of the season. He ended the season as one of the top scorers with a total of 30 goals and 19 assists. His coaches were very pleased with his efforts this year and look forward to further great work from him next season.

Ilyena Kozain '10 - New London, NH

The beauty of Proctor Academy's athletic program is that while it offers elite level varsity sports to its athletes, it also provides opportunities for students to try new sports, develop their skills, and enjoy the challenges that come with competitive team sports. Proctor's Junior Varsity Girls' Lacrosse program is one of these developmental program that routinely trains, prepares, and passes along young talent to the varsity team. Coaches Sarah Whitehead and Caddie Jackson have nominated first year defender Ilyena Kozain as this week's Athlete of the Week for her hard work, consistent effort, and tremendous play on the field during the first three games of the season. Congratulations to Ilyena for this honor, and to the JV Girls' Lax team for a great start to the Spring Season!

Winter Marvin Award Winners

Each season, Proctor's coaching staff votes on one boy and one girl to receive the Marvin Award. This honor is bestowed on individuals who are new to Proctor this year and who have demonstrated significant contributions to their sport both in their leadership qualities and in their play. Congratulations to both Kerry Daigle and Keith Buehler on this honor.

KERRY DAIGLE - EASTERN SKIING
New to Proctor this year, we knew Kerry was talented, but its been a delight to see her in action. As a first year J2, Kerry's achievements are impressive. She is the youngest skier to win the NHARA Macomber Cup - a series that included athletes far older and more experienced. She just returned from J2 Eastern Championships where she placed in the top 10 on all three days. She also attained her goal of qualifying for J2 Nationals and will depart on Wednesday for Aspen, Colorado to compete against the best 15 and 16 year olds in the country. We wish her the best of luck.

KEITH BUEHLER - BOYS' VARSITY HOCKEY
Keith has been an integral part of the boys' varsity hockey team's success this season. His perseverance and competitive fire have raised the bar for all of the players on the team, and he leads by example every day, be it practice or a game. After suffering a collarbone injury mid way through the season, Keith worked hard on his rehab, returned to form quickly, and resumed his role on our team. He makes others around him better and is committed to his studies in the same fashion as he plays the game. Congratulations, Keith, on an outstanding first season at Proctor!

Emma Jones '09 & Kelsey Taylor '11

Emma Jones '09 finished 7th in the NE XC ski championship yesterday. Her time in both the individual and relay events was faster than any of our boys' times. She is also coming off a great Lakes Region race last week where she took 4th overall. Emma is a four year senior who is finishing her Proctor ski years with terrific races.

On the ice, Kelsey Taylor '11 has remained consistent in her level of play, positive attitude, and solid work ethic. She scored a goal in the Hebron game and worked hard on the forecheck/backcheck in the varsity girls' hockey game against KUA on Monday. She is a dedicated athlete who always puts the team first, and her coaches and teammates admire that about her.

Congratulations to both Kelsey and Emma on their terrific performances this week!

Kali Stevens '11

This week's Athlete of the Week honors go to sophomore Kali Stevens. Kali is a two year member of the Freestyle Snowboard team who has experienced much success over the past two weeks. While her rides have often placed her in competitions, she had never placed in the top five until she finished first in Wednesday's slopestyle event, leading Proctor's girls team to the win at the competition. Kali's infectious attitude and endless work on her individual skills have allowed her to develop into a team leader for head coach Dave Kenney. Congratulations, Kali!

Maddy Pfeifer '12

Despite only being a first year student, Maddy Pfeifer has become a leader on Proctor's Nordic Ski Team by consistently demonstrating her excellence on courses throughout the state. On Wednesday she progressed through all of her sprint heats at St.Paul's School in first place and ended up winning the entire race! On Saturday she skied well enough (2nd of 2 qualifiers) to qualify for both the New Hampshire J2 team (born in '93 or '94) and the NH Eastern High School team. The Eastern High School Championships features the top twenty-four boys and girls of any age (freshman through senior) from New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, and New York in a weekend of racing in March in Rangeley, Maine. Congratulations to Maddy and the entire Proctor Nordic Ski team for their strong performance this weekend. See a full description of the event here.

Athlete of the Week

Nick Mugglestone '10
Nick Mugglestone has been a solid contributor to the JV Boys' Basketball team this season, earning his minutes through hard work in practice and dominating performances in games. Over the past week, Nick led the team to two victories as he poured in 27 points in 18 minutes of play against Cardigan Mountain School in an overtime win, and scored 17 points in limited minutes in a win over Holderness School. Nick's leadership ability and selfless attitude have helped lead the JV Boys to an undefeated season so far.

Spencer Harkins '09
Over the past three years, Spencer Harkins has honed his skills on the slopes of Mount Sunapee and Ragged Mountain. His hard work paid off this past week as he tied with Proctor's own George Hause in the Lakes Region Slopestyle Event last Wednesday, and followed that performance up with a "Best Trick" award at Sunday River's Jib Jamboree on Saturday.

Congratulations to both Nick and Spencer for earning Athlete of the Week honors!

Reed von Gal - '09

This week's Athlete of the Week is awarded to Reed von Gal. Due to a concussion suffered by Alex Richichi in the closing seconds of the Vermont Academy game on December 10th, Reed selflessly gave up snowboarding that week to step in between the pipes on the JV Hockey team as they faced their upcoming game against Tilton. Reed grew up playing goaltender, and was even Clark Wallach's goaltender at Cardigan School through the ninth grade. Reed double-practiced on Tuesday, skating with both the varsity girls and JV boys teams, in preparation for Wednesday's game. We were all impressed with his technique and quickness, and were thankful for his very positive attitude. During the Tilton game we scored the first goal and held onto a 1-0 lead until the final 26 seconds when Tilton, with 6 skaters on the ice, fired off a shot and finished the rebound. After a 5' overtime the game ended in a tie. Reed came off the ice smiling, as his teammates congratulated him on a job very well done. Thanks, Reed!!

Katie Little '09 & Rob Toczylowski '09

Katie Little

Katie has done a wonderful job of setting the tone for our practices and games by always working hard and giving 100%. She scored three goals to help the Hornets beat Middlesex 5-3 yesterday, as well as a goal in the Holderness game (won 3-1), and two goals in the Vermont Academy game. Perhaps Katie's greatest attribute, however, lies not in her stick skills, but in her willingness to be a team player: she is always looking to make the assist and leads by example through her solid work ethic and positive attitude.

Rob Toczylowski

Senior forward Rob Toczylowski played a stellar game against Kimball Union Academy on Wednesday as he put the finishing touches on a hard fought game. After enjoying a second period 3-1 lead, the Hornets were in for a thriller as the Wildcats would not go away. After KUA took a 4-3 lead late in the game, Toczylowski put on his cape and played superhero down the stretch as he tallied the final two goals of the contest. The first, off a nifty feed from sophomore Jon Felteau, tied the game, and forced overtime. The second goal ended the contest just one minute into the extra frame as Toczylowski put home a shorthanded breakaway.

Congratulations to both of this week's Athletes of the Week!

Marvin Award Winners: Fall 2008

The Marvin Award is given to a male and female athlete who is new to Proctor and who has exhibited superior leadership, sportsmanship, and ability on the athletic fields. The following individuals were this year's recipients for the Fall Term:

STANLEY BENION
Stanley has been an impact athlete since his arrival on campus this fall. He leads the football team in rushing yardage, kick return yardage, and in touchdowns. He has been a team-first player all season, as he has split carries with several other running backs. Stanley has also been a key contributor in our secondary at both safety and corner. Stanley has led by example and has been a very coachable athlete.

KATE CUNNINGHAM
Kate Cunningham is hard working, talented, generous, and self-effacing. Kate displayed outstanding sportsmanship, leadership, and ability throughout the season, and made a tremendous contribution to the team. Congratulations, Kate!

SAMANTHA PION
Early this fall when Sam returned from Orientation, she was pointed toward field hockey and told, “try it, you might like it.” From the first days that she picked up a stick, she took quickly to the sport, became a starting varsity player, and in her first game she scored four goals. She is a talented athlete with great speed, but she is also what coaches refer to as a "gamer." The tougher the contest and the more that is at stake, the more focused she becomes, and more often than not she produces results. While it is difficult for a freshman to exhibit leadership, on the field she leads by example though her work ethic and commitment. In regard to sportsmanship, she has always been exemplary.

John Howard ('11)

John ('11, Salisbury, NH), a striker by nature, has shifted back to center midfield to help control the tempo for the Junior Varsity Boys' Soccer team this fall, working to improve our passing game and support our forwards. He is adept at ball handling and is one of our leading scorers. Our season started well with a victory at White Mountain School where John scored twice and added an assist. He showed he is a threat outside by scoring on a long blast, and he finished a goal from in close as well. In our most recent Family Weekend game, John broke a scoreless tie in the second half of the game with a break away goal, he assisted on the next score by sending a forward in alone, and then put the game away by scoring his second on the day before being hauled down by a defender. John hustles as hard as anybody on the field, and he's a positive team member deserving of Athlete of the Week.
