Nordic Skiing | Proctor Academy

Program Overview

Proctor’s Nordic Ski program is a highly spirited, closely-knit team of motivated athletes ranging from first-timers to top regional and national competitors. The team’s focus is always on having fun and supporting each other while athletes and coaches take on new challenges alongside each other.

Proctor’s Nordic program customizes each athlete’s race schedule to their abilities and future goals. While all team members compete inter-scholastically against New England private schools in the Lakes Region League, others compete in the NHNCA series against New Hampshire’s public schools, as well as in USSA Junior National Qualifiers. Many also join in adventures such as the Canadian Ski Marathon and the Norwegian Birkebeinerrennet Marathon. Most importantly, however, is the program’s desire to create a lifelong love and appreciation for Nordic Skiing.

Preseason Training:
Beginning with pre-season off-snow roller skiing, athletes build endurance and are able to improve technique while they await colder weather.

Quebec Training:
In December, coaches and skiers travel to Foret Montmorency, Quebec for a week of training on snow. This training camp is focused on intensive lessons for the beginning skiers, as well as extensive snow time and drills for elite skiers

Norway:
Every other March, coaches and athletes travel to Norway to train and take part in the Birkebeinerrennet 54 km Ski Marathon alongside 18,000 other skiers. The trip includes skiing outside of Oslo, spectating at several World Cup events, tours of museums in Oslo, and a week of Hutte life above Lillehammer in preparation for the marathon. This camp provides incredible exposure to the best of skiing competition as well as perhaps the most intense ski culture in the world.

One of the primary goals of Proctor’s Nordic Ski program is to expose athletes both to the scope of the sport of Nordic skiing and to challenges they may not have believed were for them! Many Proctor Nordic skiers graduate having completed numerous ski marathons, an accomplishment few high school skiers can claim. In the process of competing in those marathons, Proctor’s skiers see others of all ages competing alongside them and learn skiing is a sport that expands far beyond scope of their own high school careers.

Proctor’s Nordic program boasts the Proctor Ski Area’s Bill Paine '51 Nordic Center as its home base. Full snowmaking on the John Morton designed course provides Proctor’s skiers with some of the earliest snow in the region. John Morton worked closely with Proctor coaches to design trails specifically to provide the terrain most helpful in developing strong technique. In 2014, added trail width of 20 feet on downhills and flat sections of trail, and 30 feet required of climbs on the 2.5 km loop (FIS homologation in process), allows ample room for three side-by-side racers to ski an incline simultaneously. The trail system will now allow all levels of Nordic races to take place at the Proctor Ski Area, including internationally scored competitions. Learn more about the Proctor Ski Area HERE.
