Hockey Varsity Girls
The Proctor Girls' Hockey program carries a hefty schedule, playing thirty-plus games against some of the top Division 1 and Division 2 teams in New England. Coaches and players work toward individual and collective development through hard work and selfless play. Practices often consist of small games and drills that foster a highly competitive environment in which the players are able to push both themselves and their teammates. Concerted collective effort each day allows for the girls to develop their skills and knowledge of the game, while enjoying being part of a team working toward a common goal. Off-ice training is an integral aspect of the program as well, and is based off of training sessions composed by Volt Athletics. The majority of the girls on the team hope to play at the college level, and it is via their hard work, academic integrity, and the guidance and exposure they receive at Proctor that many get the opportunity do so.

CoachSteve Doherty was born in southwest Michigan. While growing up, his father held a front office position in hockey operations for the Dallas Stars farm team. Because of this, the rink was his church. Steve and his brother were at the rink every day - in and around pro hockey their entire childhood. In his youth, Steve played AAA travel hockey until his high school years, when he went on to play Junior A hockey in the North American Hockey League. After junior hockey, Steve attended Western Michigan University and received his bachelor's degree in sales and business marketing. He played two seasons of minor pro hockey in Kalamazoo, Michigan before ending his hockey career. For most of his adult life after that, Steve lived in Colorado and Wyoming where he pursued life in the mountains to work in the ski industry. He and his wife, Sarah, moved to Andover in 2021 with their two dogs, and currently live on Elbow Pond Road. Steve's hobbies include mountain biking, skiing, snowmobiling, golfing, hunting, and fishing.

CoachAfter graduating from Proctor in 1991 and Northeastern University in 1995, where I was a member of the women's hockey team, I immediately pursued a career in independent schools. My passion for coaching and working with young people was the driver. From 1995-97 I returned to Proctor as an intern in admissions, athletics, and development while coaching field hockey, ice hockey, and lacrosse. Following my time at Proctor, I moved on to Lawrence Academy, where I served as Interim Athletic Director and Head Coach of many teams. Coaching successes included taking our girls’ Varsity Soccer team to a New England Championship and our girls hockey team to two Independent School League titles and five New England Tournament appearances. My coaching career led me to both Northeastern University and Boston College as an assistant hockey coach. I have served as President of NEPSAC Girls Hockey Association and held various roles at USA Hockey, including Director of Hockey Operations for both the USA Women's National and Olympic teams. Following those experiences, I worked at Dexter Southfield School, where I established the upper school interscholastic athletic program before returning to Lawrence Academy, where I've spent the past 19 years, serving the as Director of Athletic Operations and Assistant Director of Admissions.
