Off-Campus Programs: A Step Beyond Comfort

Ryan Graumann

Today, students interested in enrolling in one of Proctor’s five term-long off-campus programs for next year submitted their applications. Some are applying to study off-campus for the first time, while others will look to add a second or third trimester abroad to their Proctor experience journey. So why is it that more than 80% of our students choose to study off-campus? Off-campus programs are the most visible representation of our belief that the deepest, most enduring learning occurs when students engage directly with their subject matter through hands-on, place-based experiences that gradually build their confidence to step outside of their comfort zone. These programs ignite something profound in students - a spark that transforms theoretical learning into lived experience, abstract concepts into tangible understanding that then allows them to ask better questions, engage more meaningfully with their studies, and dive even deeper into the concept or subject being studied.

Students participating in off-campus programs become comfortable existing on the “edge” between comfort and challenge, with one foot firmly planted outside of the familiar; this is where the deepest learning occurs. As Interim Head of School Steve Wilkins noted in a blog post this fall as part of his “Learning and the Brain” series, when students encounter challenges their brains initiate a complex dance of neurochemical reactions: serotonin embraces the opportunity, dopamine sets off an expectation of pleasure, and cortisol serves as a measured caution. The hippocampus actively searches for previous experiences that might inform the current challenge. Students participating in Off-Campus Programs will inevitably find themselves in what educational psychologist James Nottingham called “The Learning Pit" – those moments when cortisol levels spike, and even the most capable learners question their abilities.

As Steve noted, “Effective educators create the environments in which students can pursue the “why” questions without fear of failure. The brain learns through a relentless loop of trial-error-correction-trial-error and so on.” Off-campus educators and program directors understand that effective learning and growth do not occur when students are pushed into panic zones, but rather, they are cultivated by carefully scaffolded challenges that allow students to expand their capabilities as they are ready (and this is different for each learner), and within a supportive learning community. For Ocean Classroom students, it might manifest during a first midnight watch as a Junior Watch Officer, carrying the responsibility of vessel and crew safety. In Aix-en-Provence, France, it might emerge in the challenge of capturing Mediterranean light that once challenged masters like Van Gogh. In Segovia, Spain or Monteverde, Costa Rica, it could surface when navigating cultural nuances while living immersed in Spanish and with a host family. And on Mountain Classroom, a student might encounter that challenge while serving as route planner and guide for the day on a backcountry backpacking expedition. It is during these moments of challenge and productive struggle that new neural pathways are forged, existing ones are strengthened, and lasting confidence is built.

Off-campus programs are not simply adventures for adventure's sake but rather carefully crafted academic programs that are also integrated into our broader academic curriculum. Students participating in Ocean Classroom don't just learn to sail a tall ship - they conduct vital marine science research, analyzing plankton populations through daily tows and contributing long-term data sets. In European Art Classroom, they hone their skills as an artist by sketching in the same locations that inspired Cézanne and receiving tips from program directors who are themselves professional artists. Mountain Classroom weaves environmental studies, expedition skills, and place-based learning about indigenous perspectives on land stewardship into the curriculum. In Segovia, students don't just study the Spanish language – they engage with complex topics like immigration and regionalism through direct discussions with locals and host families.

The decision to participate in an off-campus program requires courage - from both students and families. It means choosing to step away from the familiar routines of campus life and embrace the unknown. Yet, it is precisely this willingness to venture beyond comfort zones that allows for the most profound growth. Students return with not just new skills and knowledge but with transformed perspectives on themselves and their place in the world. In an era of generative AI, social media that increasingly captures our attention and leaders around the globe looking inward, off-campus programs offer something increasingly rare and valuable: direct, unfiltered engagement with the world in all its complexity. They challenge students to be present, to problem-solve in real time, to adapt to unexpected circumstances, and to engage authentically with different cultures and environments. Yes, they experience individual growth, but they also become better prepared to be engaged global citizens.

In hindsight, they often become defining experiences of a student’s Proctor career, influencing students' subsequent course choices at Proctor and sometimes even alter the trajectory of life after Proctor. As highlighted in this recent post by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, some students deepen existing academic passions and career interests, while others discover entirely unexpected paths and pursuits that shape their future endeavors.
