The work of the Facilities Team is in constant flux and incredibly varied. It is dependent on the season, the strategic priorities of the school, planned infrastructure upgrades, and the inevitable emergency repairs that come with maintaining a 2,500-acre campus with more than 45 buildings. Their work is certainly top of mind during a snowy winter week like this one, as the team springs into action: shoveling, plowing, treating paths and walkways, and making sure we can navigate campus safely.

Their work impacts each and every student, member of our professional community, and the extended Proctor family – parents and guardians, grandparents, and other friends of the school and members of the local community who enjoy events or spend time on Proctor's central campus, in the Proctor Woodlands and extensive trail network, or enjoying the Proctor Ski Area, Teddy Maloney '88 Hockey Rink, or Stone Chapel, just to name some of the most heavily utilized spaces of Proctor’s extensive physical plant.
The work of the Facilities Team never stops. Issues arise during breaks and on holidays, and the team works through the summer supporting Gordon Research Conference attendees and completing special projects. Exciting new construction projects like the Health and Well-Being Center – scheduled to open in Fall 2026 – demand coordination alongside everyday maintenance. A Facilities Team member is always on call. As someone who moved into on-campus residences this past fall, I witnessed firsthand just how many moving pieces are involved in a single residence change—and can only imagine how this work multiplies across an entire community. The entire team approached it with such incredible care, communication, follow-up, and good humor.
In this season of gratitude, we are deeply thankful for the entire Facilities Team! Their work is critical to our operations as a school.

What's your favorite space on campus to work on or be in, and why?
Favorite is tough, but least favorite is easy—the basement of the old health center. I've spent many hours in a full Tyvek suit in the crawl space running pipe and wire. Favorite would be Woodlands Building, I guess. The open woodwork and fireplace aesthetic is nice.
What's a project you're particularly proud of?
Patching all the holes made in the Learning Center—basement to third floor—made when repairing the steam heat system a few years ago. I know they're there, but others can't see it.
What is your favorite part of your work on the Facilities Team?
When the students are particularly thankful for us fixing whatever is affecting their day.
If you could go back to high school and participate in one of Proctor's programs, what would you choose?

Be respectful of the buildings and community. Think twice before acting—Housekeeping and Facilities work hard regularly to keep the buildings and grounds looking good. Please don't add to the workload because of an impulsive moment.

I spent the first 25 years of my working life, plus a few, working in the foodservice industry. Also, I can blow air from my sinuses through my eye.

What's a project you're particularly proud of?
It certainly isn't the best-case scenario for the individuals who live in the space, but any emergency boiler replacement that had to be done—you work together to get heat to the space as soon as possible, and it's a great feeling to share.
