Certain students enter our lives and change us - as individuals, as educators, as peers, as a community. Patrick Moore ‘25 was one of those students. From the moment he joined the Proctor community as a ninth grader, he changed the trajectory of every life his path crossed. When we received news of Patrick’s passing in late August after a tragic accident, we were shaken to the core as a community.
Patrick embodied the very best of Proctor. He leaned into every aspect of his Proctor experience with energy, enthusiasm and positivity. He was confident and conversant in the classroom, leading class discussions with his lively questions and diligent approach. He distinguished himself in athletics in football, basketball, and baseball. He was a dorm leader, actor on stage, tour guide for admissions, and inspired wood worker. His love for all things Proctor was infectious, and Patrick elevated the experience of his peers and the Proctor faculty. Quite simply, we loved Patrick with our whole hearts and he loved Proctor, his family, and his friends with his whole heart.
Grief is a complex thing. It is not a challenge that we should expect to “work through”, but simply a companion to learn to walk alongside. Our responsibility as a community has been to show up for each other just as Patrick showed up for us -- to hug each other when we need a shoulder to cry on, to encourage each other when we are down, to once again learn to laugh with each other even though it feels counter to the process of mourning. We have done this to the best of our ability over the past two months, and yet there is a Patrick-sized hole in our community that we will never quite figure out how to fill.
As the Moore Family has grieved, they have partnered with us and other friends of Proctor to set up a scholarship in Patrick’s honor. The Patrick Moore Scholarship has been established by family, friends, and classmates to honor the legacy of Patrick. The scholarship description notes, “A gifted leader, Patrick helped others see the best in themselves and consistently sought out opportunities to elevate those around him while serving as a catalyst for positive change within the community. He led by example in all that he did, demonstrating the power of action, worrying not what others thought of him, but of how he might positively impact those around him. The Patrick Moore ‘25 Scholarship, a need-based award, seeks to support students who, like Patrick, elevate the Proctor community through their leadership, commitment, passion, and belief in others.”
Through this scholarship, we remember and celebrate Patrick's enduring legacy, ensuring that his spirit of adventure, creativity, and leadership continues to inspire future generations of Proctor students.
