The Start of Something Great!

Scott Allenby

To commence: to have or make a beginning, to start. At 4:00 pm today, long-awaited admissions decisions hit the inboxes of a remarkable pool of applicants. For this group of future Hornets, it is the commencement of their Proctor journey, and in our view, the start of something great. The next step in this journey is attending one of our two accepted student days on April 4 and April 8.

Our applicant pool was as robust and diverse as it has ever been, challenging our Admissions Team to not think about the individual accolades or resumes of each student, but about how each individual student would fit within the Proctor community. This concept of fit can be lost in a highlight-reel society where adults, too often, work to curate their child’s life. Is this year’s group of accepted students talented? Absolutely. Are they accomplished in a variety of activities? Of course. But what matters most to us is that they and their families deeply understand the intersection of potential and effort, and the role Proctor can play in their expansion of identity during their high school years.

During the 1990s, Proctor adopted an informal motto: Attitude is Everything. Every now and then you will see some tattered t-shirts on our most veteran faculty with the block print reminding us of the importance of this mindset that has long guided our approach to working with adolescents. Our Admissions Team believes firmly, as do the rest of us, that a community is only as strong as those who embrace it as their own. We have identified those students we believe will help us thrive as a community, and now the responsibility now falls on each accepted student and their family to make sure Proctor is the right fit for them.

We believe we have found students who will suck the marrow out of the Proctor experience, who will arrive on campus next September hungry to learn and embrace all the challenges that lie before them, who embrace the “not yet” versions of themselves and recognize how Proctor will shape them into the “now I am” version.

Just as the power of Proctor’s educational model lies in the entirety of the experience and not in the individual programs that make us a unique educational alternative, we believe the power of the Proctor community lies in the collection of individuals who love to call Proctor home. No two students will forge the same path through Proctor. Each will have a unique four year academic plan crafted alongside their advisor. Each will find connection with a unique group of friends in the dorm, on their teams, and in their classes. Each will start their Proctor adventure believing they know who they are, and will quickly find themselves immersed in situations that stretch that sense of self beyond recognition. That is the beauty of Proctor. It is the start of something great.
