Following the retirement of one of Proctor's largest "classes" of employees, we are excited to welcome an incredibly talented new cohort of dedicated faculty members to the community for the 2024-2025 school year. Admissions Office
Chris Allen '12
Chris is a Proctor graduate (Class of 2012), with extensive experience in college counseling, professional soft skills training, and advising high schools students throughout the DC, Maryland, and Virginia region. An alumnus of West Virginia University, where he studied Public Relations, and native of Washington, DC, Chris has dedicated the last six years of his life to working with underserved populations through non-profits City Kids Wilderness Project, Urban Alliance, and New Futures DC as a Program Coordinator and Community Outreach fellow. He also spent time working with the National Park Service's Rock Creek Park as a Community Relations liaison. Additionally, Chris also has a passion for music, which developed during his time at Proctor as a drummer and vocalist with the Jazz/Rock Ensemble under the tutelage of Bill Wightman. He has amassed over ten years of experience performing and producing music for himself and others. Now back at his alma mater, he aims to continue to challenge young people and their families to think critically about the crucial decisions that make up their futures, while building relationships that will last a lifetime. Chris will be a dorm parent in MLS and will be working in Admissions.
Ashley D'Emic
Ashley graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Before joining Proctor, Ashley served as an Assistant Director of Admissions, bringing valuable experience and a passion for guiding students through the admissions process. With years of coaching experience and running a travel team in South Florida, Ashley is excited to join Proctor as the Associate Admissions Director and Varsity Girls Head Lacrosse Coach. Her hobbies include spending time at the beach, snowboarding, and being with her dogs and family. Ashley will be a dorm parent in Summerfield.
Athletics
Mikah Baptiste
Mikah grew up in Ottawa, Ontario and attended Kimball Union Academy prior to matriculating to Norwich University where she majored in Criminal Justice and minored in Psychology and Pre Law. Mikah expects to earn a Master's of Public Administration from the University of New Hampshire in December. She played hockey at Norwich and UNH, and has coached youth teams including ALSS Elite, Islander's Youth Hockey, and Black Bears. Prior to college she served as a member of a volunteer fire department. Mikah will serve as Assistant Equipment Manager, Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Varsity Girls Hockey Coach.
Noah Smith
Noah is a New Hampshire local growing up in the lakes region. He graduated from Colby-Sawyer College with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training, a coaching certification, and a minor in psychology. Noah is joining the Proctor team for the first year after spending the previous two years working at a boarding school in Massachusetts. He will be working with our athlete’s as an athletic trainer. When Noah is not working, you could find him spending his time fishing, hiking, or doing anything outdoors.
Learning Skills
Becky Beno, P’26
Originally from Alexandria, New Hampshire, Becky graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a B.A. in English Literature. After college, Becky and her husband served in the Peace Corps in Suriname, South America, where they lived in a rural village and taught English and math. Returning to New Hampshire, Becky embraced the close-knit environment of The White Mountain School, a small, independent boarding school. Over her 24-year tenure, Becky’s primary job was as a Learning Specialist. She also held other roles such as Community Service Coordinator, Cultural Events Planner, Dorm Head, and ESOL Teacher.
Becky holds a certificate in Coaching Teens and Youth with ADHD from the University of New Hampshire and a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from The School for International Training. Becky is also interested in supporting youth mental health, and she has presented on the topic of integrating learning and mental health support at the annual Small Boarding School Association Conference. Becky’s educational philosophy is grounded in a student-centered, strengths-based approach.
Outside the classroom, Becky is a proud parent of two sons, Justin (19) and Alden (16), who will be a junior at Proctor this year. Becky enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, and cross-country skiing. She also loves volunteering with adaptive sports programs, and she is a fan of live theater. Becky will be a dorm parent in Rulon-Miller.
Amanda Hatfield
Originally from Massachusetts, Amanda earned her B.A. in Psychology and M.S. in Elementary Education with a dual licensure in Moderate Special Needs from Simmons University. In the years following her college education, she worked with elementary school children before finding her way to The White Mountain School. She joins Proctor as an alumni of Pomfret School, CT which gave her a deep appreciation for the power of boarding schools.
Amanda’s experience in the classroom and passion for student growth will serve her well as she takes on the role of Learning Specialist.
Alongside being part of the Proctor community, Amanda enjoys many hobbies, including reading, sewing, photography, and cooking. All of those hobbies are intertwined with her love for the outdoors. You can often find her for walks around campus, hiking the White Mountains, paddleboarding the local lakes, or trying something new. Around campus, you can expect to find her cooking meals with students, walking friends’ dogs, or reading outside.
Math Department
Harry Burnham
Originally from Sutton, NH, Harry went overseas to study Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews before returning stateside to teach Math (and occasionally Latin). He recently earned his Masters of Education in Mathematics from Lesley University. Harry joined Proctor's Mathematics Department in 2024. In his spare time, he enjoys rowing, gaming, baking, and spending time outdoors with his family. Harry lives on campus with his wife, Maggie, and daughter, Margot. Harry will be living in Gannett with his family.
Stephanie Einstein
Stephanie is one of the new Proctor Academy math teachers. Stephanie graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in mathematics and minor in critical social thought and has a certificate in data science and machine learning. Stephanie is excited to be starting a math teaching career at Proctor. In addition to teaching math, Stephanie hopes to engage students in an after school dance program with a focus in various styles as well. Stephanie’s passions include dance, music, math, and research, as well as conversations around equity and inclusion. Stephanie will be a dorm parent in Carriage House.
Kirsten Wilkinson, P'21
Kirsten grew up in western Maine. She did a B.S. in Biology at Cornell University, a M.S. in Biotechnology at Johns Hopkins University, and an M.A.T. at Plymouth State University in Science Education. She was in biomedical research in the early part of her career, took a break while her kids were little, then taught math and science (and did LOTS of other stuff) at Sant Bani School in Sanbornton, NH for 17 years. Her son Toby is a Proctor grad, and her husband Scott is the Race Administrator for the Eastern Ski Team at Proctor. Her hobbies are weaving and other fiber arts, and small-scale farming.
History Department
Hiapo Emmons-Shaw, P’26
Hiapo is a classroom teacher, an outdoor educator, a family man, and a curious person. He studied history and geography in college, and wrote a thesis about the laws that allowed the creation of National Forests in the eastern US. He realized how big and fascinating the world really is when he worked for the Peace Corps in South America after college. That’s when he discovered his love for teaching, and he’s made sharing that curiosity about people and the world his life’s work. He still loves traveling, experiencing new landscapes, meeting new people, and getting outside to climb, hike, pedal, or paddle whenever he can. Hiapo will be a dorm parent in Rulon-Miller.
Chris Chicoine
Chris Chicoine graduated with honors from Harvard College after serving eight years as a Combat Medic in the Army. Chris played rugby at Harvard and received his AB in History and Science going on to postgraduate research at the Harvard Belfar Center, US Naval War College, and MIT Lincoln Laboratories. He is now enrolled in the MALS program at Dartmouth, concentrating in Globalization. In his free time Chris volunteers as a firefighter, ski patrol medic, and with a regional wilderness rescue team. Chris and his wife Brigid love adventuring outdoors with their black lab Moseley, hiking, climbing, paddling, golfing, or skiing across the Northeast. Chris will be teaching History this year and has served as a Rock Climbing and Developmental Ski Coach as well as a Dorm surrogate for Proctor in the past.
World Language Department
Liz Fortier
Liz, originally from Lima, Perú, is a proud first-generation immigrant who has built a vibrant life in the United States. She grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, before moving to New Hampshire to attend New England College, where she earned her degree. Now residing in Concord with her husband and their four children, Liz is thrilled to be part of the Proctor Academy community. Previously at The Beech Hill School in Hopkinton, she taught Spanish, served as the office administrator, and instructed a Latin American arts and crafts class. Her hobbies include being creative with Canva, volunteering for her community, and she has recently taken up gardening. Liz looks forward to teaching Spanish and empowering her students with an appreciation and understanding of the Spanish language and culture. Liz will be teaching Spanish and coaching JV Field Hockey.
Daniel Simpson
Daniel is a Williston Northampton School graduate who then attended Union College and received his bachelor's degree in Spanish and English. Having spent his entire life immersed in boarding school environments, he is excited to embark on his first full year of teaching at Proctor. Daniel has taught ESL and College Writing for middle and upper school students at the Northfield Mount Hermon Summer Session program. This year, he looks forward to teaching Spanish and collaborating with the Language department at Proctor. In his free time, Daniel enjoys exercising, playing the piano, and reading. Daniel will be living in the English House.
Off-Campus Programs
Ted Fuell | Mountain Classroom Instructor
Ted grew up in California and the Netherlands before making his way to Maine, graduating from Bowdoin College with a degree in Earth and Oceanographic Science and Urban Studies. After Bowdoin, Ted moved to Colorado to teach history at Steamboat Mountain School. He returns back East excited to join the Proctor community and take students out West with the Mountain Classroom. In his free time, you can find Ted curled up with a book and a cup of tea, running on a trail, or practicing his tele turns.
Derek Mansell | Proctor en Segovia Co-Director, Fall
Derek grew up in Ohio and New Hampshire. While a student at Trinity College he and friends traveled to Mexico, and that began his love affair with Spanish and the cultures of Latin America and Spain. He earned a Masters of Bicultural Education from the University of the Americas, before returning to New Hampshire to study Natural Resources Management in Berlin (NH). That led to a job teaching various Science and Math classes at Proctor, from 1981 through 1996. During those years he completed a MALS degree at Dartmouth college, with Proctor’s generous support. In the fall of 1996, he began a 18-year stretch working as Co-director of Proctor’s overseas experience in Segovia, and teaching Spanish on campus in Andover. Since retiring in 2014, Derek has lived mostly in Oaxaca, Mexico, but with frequent visits to Segovia. He is excited to be able to return to work for Proctor-in-Segovia this fall.
Shelby Wischan | Proctor en Segovia Co-Director, Fall & Spring, & World Language Department
Shelby grew up in New Hampshire, received her bachelor‘s in Secondary English Education, and completed her master‘s in Applied Linguistics with a specialization in TESOL. Shelby taught eighth grade ELA for a number of years, and while doing so she coached basketball, soccer, and ran Student Council. Building healthy and meaningful relationships with students has always been her top priority as an educator. Her passion for teaching and her love for traveling have led Shelby to teach English in five different countries. She has explored over 100 countries and loves to learn new languages. Shelby is a co-director of Proctor en Segovia and couldn’t be more excited to facilitate this life-changing experience for students! When she isn’t working, Shelby can be found rock climbing, canyoning, white water kayaking, reading, or planning her next adventure. Shelby will also spend the winter on Proctor’s campus teaching Spanish and serving as a dorm surrogate.
Arts Department
Garrett Gleason | Music Director
Garrett is a Massachusetts native who received his Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Studies from the University of Maryland in 2013. Since then, he has toured multiple continents as a guitarist with the American Pops Orchestra and the Boston Show Band, a multi-instrumentalist in The Spongebob Musical's first national tour, and a music director and sideman in various original groups including his own. As a bandleader and artist, he has released over 15 albums on various labels and independently, and he has collaborated and performed with musicians from all over the world. Garrett is deeply excited to make Proctor Academy his home in 2024 and to push the students to be more articulate musicians and vulnerable people in the process. You can most likely find Garrett in Proctor's recording studio or in one of the campus' fields playing with his dog, Stevie Licks. Garrett and his partner Erika will be living in Mac House.
Science Department
Jeffrey Prado
Former Mountain Classroom Instructor Jeffrey Prado has returned to Proctor as a Science teacher and Greenhouse Manager! He will be living in King House with his partner Sarah.
College Counseling
Heather Deardorff | Associate Director of College Counseling
Throughout her long career in college admission, Heather has seen all sides of the process; she has served as a college admission officer, college counselor, independent consultant, and guided her own children as a parent. Originally from Pennsylvania, Heather and her family moved to New Hampshire in 2008 to join the faculty at St. Paul’s School, where she served as a college counselor, softball coach, advisor, and head of house. She then served as director of college counseling at The Potomac School in McLean, VA before returning to New Hampshire in 2022.
Heather graduated from Franklin & Marshall College and earned an M.S. in counseling from the University of Vermont. She and her husband Jeff have a black lab and two grown children. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, biking, and all water-related sports.
