Five days in the woods reminded me that the lesson of Orientation isn't simply that we can persevere through something challenging. It is that we can do more than we imagined when we do those hard things together.

22 juniors and seniors gathered with their families on Wednesday in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, to launch Proctor’s 34th Ocean Classroom program.

After 56 years of Wilderness Orientation, we have learned that adolescents are capable of so much more than we think they are.

As we begin another school year, we are excited to welcome a new group of faculty and staff to Proctor. We are grateful they have chosen to invest their talents here, and we look forward to the contributions they will make to the lives of the students they will come to know in the years ahead.

As you anticipate your arrival, think about your favorite Proctor memories: waking up to a desert sunrise on Mountain Classroom, jumping through the ice during Polar Swim, scoring a goal under the lights and sprinting to the student section, laughing with friends at the swinging bridge, playing hacky sack on the turf. Each of these moments have something in common: phones are not present. 

This July, a group of Proctor students and members of our professional community traveled to South Dakota to spend ten days as guests on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations, living and working alongside the members of the Sicangu and Oglala communities who welcomed them.

As the construction of Proctor Academy’s new $8M Health and Well-Being Center nears completion, Proctor, Lavalee Brensigner, and HP Cummings Construction are thrilled to report that after whole-building testing, air tightness performance far surpasses Passive House and high-performance building standards.
