Living with host families, continuing in their tenth grade courses, and immersing themselves in Costa Rican culture affords a powerful learning opportunity that very few high school sophomores around the country have the good fortune to experience.

At the end of the school year, traditions happen that seem to coincide with the initial arrival of the harbingers of the season –black flies, mosquitoes, and spring peepers.

As a boarding school, every single student is involved in Proctor’s afternoon program, and this group works, daily, to help coaches and students have an opportunity to pursue their passions, learn new skills, and compete against other schools across New England.

The path to happiness is not rooted in more happiness, but in productive struggle. We must communicate to our children that we are not in a pursuit of happiness, but a pursuit of balance, of experiencing joy and sorrow, despair and hope, productivity and apathy, happiness and unhappiness. 

In the latest Proctor en Segovia post, Hailey, Piper, and Ben transport their readers to Barcelona, a vibrant city on the Mediterranean. Just 500 kilometers and a two-and-a-half-hour high-speed train ride from Segovia and Madrid, Barcelona is a world apart – a cosmopolitan city that has a multi-layered past, a modern sensibility, and serves as the hub of Catalan culture, language, and architecture. 

This year’s Hays Speaking Prize felt different than the ones I have experienced over the last few years at Proctor. We audience members definitely experienced our fair share of hard stories to hear.

Whether it is seeing students come to life through the study of Economics, US History, Globalization, or European History, members of the History Department utilize their own interests and passions to fuel the design of their courses.

We are ready to embrace our role as a school in developing an intentional, reasonable, long-arching strategy to help educate, shield, and protect our students from believing the best of this world lives behind a screen.
