Hornets Prevail in Double OT Thriller

There is no such thing as an easy game in NEPSAC AA, and tonight proved that as both KUA and Proctor showed up ready to prove they belong in the post-season conversation. Both teams have short benches and lack size, but make up for those challenges with play-making ability. In an instant classic, the Hornets struggled to convert open shots in the first half, but played stingy defense and led 32-29 at the half. The second half saw an increased pace of play, as Bol Akot (25 points, 8 assists), Mykel Derring (21 points, 17 rebounds), Sheer Akot (18 points), and Miles Davis (14 points) all contributed double figures. As the clock ran down in regulation, the Hornets thought they had the game won, leading 68-65 with seven seconds to play. The Hornets did everything right defensively forcing a highly contested shot at the buzzer, but KUA's Mark Dolgin drilled a deep three as the buzzer sounded to tie it up. To overtime we went where both teams exchanged figurative body blows until, again, the Hornets led by three 76-73 with ten seconds on the clock. Again, the Hornets played great defense, and AGAIN Dolgin drilled a three as time expired. Double overtime. Proctor pushed pace in the second overtime and a clutch three by Derring and two free throws by Bol Akot gave the Hornets a 89-82 lead with thirty seconds left. Akot delivered two more clutch free throws down the stretch, as Proctor walked away with the win. Kudos to KUA for a great game. Proctor is back in action Friday night when we host Vermont Academy.
