Alumni Update: Kozain '10 Named Minerva Fellow

Earlier this spring, Ilyena Kozain ‘10 (Union College ‘14) was recognized for her remarkable contributions to the Union College crew team. This week, Ilyena (pictured above giving the valedictory address at the 2010 Proctor Commencement) was named as a Minerva Fellow for Union’s prestigious Minerva Fellowship Program. As a fellow, Ilyena will travel to Dgeye Village, Uganda for the next year where she will be paired with a social entrepreneurial organization. Ilyena, along with the other ten Minerva fellows, will work for eleven months and return to Union College and live in a Minerva house for one month where they will participate in a social entrepreneurship course and educate current students about their experiences abroad.

While Proctor’s Social Entrepreneurship course was not offered until this past academic year, Ilyena's endeavors are directly in line with the course’s goals of connecting our students with social entrepreneurs around the world. Through work with Freedom in Creation, a Ugandan based not-for-profit, over the past year, Proctor’s social entrepreneurship students learned about the challenges of enterprise in the developing world and ways to promote entrepreneurship within communities. This blog post from earlier this year shares additional insights on Proctor’s social entrepreneurship program and its ability to combine the rich entrepreneurial spirit that lives in Proctor’s students and the school’s overarching goal of graduating students ready to positively impact the world around them.

Surely, Ilyena’s experience over the next twelve months will be transformational. Congratulations, Ilyena, and we look forward to you come back and share your experiences with our students next year!
