Hornets Rally, but Fall Short

Proctor’s boys’ varsity basketball team took the court Sunday afternoon for the consolation game of the Blackburn Invitational Tournament in a rematch against Gould Academy. After being embarrassed at Gould (62-102), the Hornets looked to rebound from Saturday night’s loss and to prove they can compete with some of NEPSAC AA’s best. After falling behind 2-10 early, Proctor picked up its intensity, converted shots, and shared the ball. Despite early foul trouble, Proctor battled to a 40-40 half-time score and came out in the second half with the same focus and sustained effort needed to compete against Gould. The Hornets would take multiple 5 point leads throughout the second half, eventually taking a 73-70 lead on a Mykel Derring ’19 3 pointer. Gould would counter with nine unanswered points, however, and seemed to have the game under control when Proctor forced three consecutive turnovers and cut the deficit to 83-86 with 10 seconds to play. After another Gould turnover, Proctor had possession under their own basket, but were unable to create a good look at the hoop before Bol Akot ’20 took a desperation shot at the buzzer that rimmed out. Moral victories do not count for much in this league, but the resolve this team showed after two tough losses this week will hopefully result in a good week of practice heading into the St. Andrew’s Holiday Classic next weekend in Barrington, Rhode Island.

Bol Akot led the Hornet attack with 27 points and 13 assists, while Mykel Derring added 20 points, Terrell Brown ’19 14 and Miles Davis ’19 13.
