First of the Year Race a Success
Well, honestly, the conditions weren't ideal for our skiers as the waxing was tricky. This was a classic race in about four inches of wet, new snow that made the tracks fast but hill climbing a tad tricky. As we know, all skiers deal with the same factors and our team's energy and enthusiasm were fantastic. The girls' race started first, and like the boys', the distance was three loops around our sprint course for a total of 5 kilometers (that's about 3 miles for the metrically challenged). All of our girls except for Stella Coulter-Duling are new to the Proctor team, and all of them brought a contagious positive attitude. Congrats to Stella and Madeline Boyd, Aubrey Ashby, Maura Kelly, and Ella Barney for working hard, finishing well, and cheering like crazy through the day. One of them won a warm spot in the coaches' hearts by saying before we skied in, "Is there anything else I can do to help?" Love that attitude. The boys' race featured a mix of lots of returning skiers leading a passel of new nordies this year. The newly elected captains Matt Bent and Alex Muromcew are leading this merry band, and the other seniors returning this winter are Ryan Methven, Myles Powers, Asher Whittemore, and Nelson Makechnie. Other returners are Will Hench (sick on the day), Rio Hashimoto, and Cole Schwabacher. We're so happy to have senior Augie Mueller joining us as a rookie veteran along with young guns Colin Shaver, Baxter Curry, Reid Sias, and Teige Wright. The guys got after it and skied well and most importantly, the whole team learned about pacing, 'floating' up the hill climbs, and finding speed where it was 'cheap.' Thanks to parent Jen B. for snacks (& all the parents who have helped keep our snack bin full!), as well as Margaret C-D. for photos. We hope to see all parents at a race this year if possible, and you can follow the team on Instagram - proctornordic. Lastly, we can never thank the Proctor Ski Area crew enough (Garry & Adam) for their help grooming, setting up & moving gear, and all they do to make our facility so amazing!
