"This is the start of something truly transformative.

Today’s groundbreaking isn’t just about a building - it’s about a new way of thinking. It’s about how we, as a community, choose to prioritize the well-being of our adolescents - not just their academic and athletic success, but their emotional, mental, and physical health.

As a physician, a parent, and a trustee, I have seen up close the complexity of adolescent development at this time in history. We are in the midst of a mental health crisis that’s affecting young people in every corner of society. Rates of anxiety, depression, and self-harm have skyrocketed, and boarding schools like Proctor are being asked to do more than ever before and…

Rather than shrinking from that responsibility, today Proctor steps forward. This center will be a place where support is embraced, not stigmatized. Where students can access timely, compassionate, integrated care. Where we recognize that learning doesn’t happen in isolation from health.

I am especially interested in what will happen inside this building and all around campus. While the structure will be spectacular, it’s the programming, the conversations, the daily practices, and the relationships it supports that will transform lives. What we build into our culture is what our students will carry forward.

This is about aligning with science. Neuroscience and psychology tell us that adolescents thrive when they feel connected and understood. This center is a commitment to building an environment that fosters those conditions.

It is also a recognition that well-being is not a luxury or an add-on. It is foundational.

I am so grateful to be part of this community that isn’t afraid to evolve, to question the old models, and to do what’s right even when it’s hard.

To every student who will walk through the doors of this building in the years ahead: I hope you feel seen. I hope you feel supported. And I hope you know that your health, your whole health! matters deeply to us."
